Non-Rooted GB .588 to .596? How?

I am running the non-rooted .588 GB on my Droid X (the release that supposedly leaked out early...it was fully signed and didn't require any hacking to install).

When I try to install .596, the installation errors out. I've read some threads about upgrading from .588 to .596, but they all talk about rooted version of .588.

How do you upgrade from NON-rooted .588?

Thank you for asking this question. I think I want to do the same thing as you - I just want to go from NONrooted .588 to NONrooted .596. How can I do that?

Unfortunately, you can't install GB 596 over the top of 588. I tried but it wouldn't install. So, used the Linux method posted on various forums to get back to FROYO. Then installed 596 via the recovery method/update zip file. I had to install twice as I received error message on the 1st attempt. However, the 2nd attempt worked fine...then did a reset and was off & running.

You could use gingerbreak to root .588 and then install .596

I too was hoping .596 would go over the signed .588 but alas, no dice.

How do you get the phone back to the FRYO and then update it?

To get back to Froyo:

- settings/apps/development/turn on USB debug
- download SBF file
- install Moto drivers for DX / Win7 64
- install RSD Lite
- hold cam/vol down/power buttons to power to bootloader
- plug in to PC
- Run RSD Lite in admin mode
- select device and SBF file
NOTE: Sometime installation hangs at 100% and reports to manual reboot, at this point you have to pull battery, unplug cable and enter back into Bootloader mode by pressing Volume Down + Camera + Power and then plug cable back in. RSDLite should read Complete Successful after connecting and then you can power down,
- Power up into recovery by pressing Home and Power
- Select Search (Right Button)
- Select Wipe Data / Factory Restore
- After complete select Restart
