The major difference between ath3nos and BACKside-IHO is the kernel. There are new kernels being developed for both the Optimus S & V. BACKside-IHO has Blarf's new r1 kernel, while there is work on a new kernel for the S called XioniaRedux by drewwalton.
These kernels are being built for the specific devices, so it is advisable to use the proper build for your phone.
