I've been searching the web and forums for a couple of days and haven't really found the answers I need, so here I am.

I just acquired the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, and am eager to put it to use, but can't really get past "all those permissions." I even thought about returning it! I get that some permissions are required, so I don't need that to be explained. The thing is, generally if you are using a PC, there is a clear ToS--is there also such a thing with apps? Where would I find these? Plus most sites on the web have an area for you to set the amount you are willing to share. I'm not finding that with the apps I downloaded. I was very concerned about the Facebook app, and generally set security features high on my PC, but is it not possible with the android app? I was wondering if I can get around these permissions--as in is it 'safer' to access FB or Ebay (for example) using an internet browser on android (I prefer Firefox, but as yet have not installed it on my tab 2) as opposed to the app?

Some apps have ridiculous permissions (totally unnecessary)--and I don't mind paying extra to avoid data harvesting, but how much better are paid versions?

Look--I know there are posts regarding permissions, but not many seemed concerned about the vagueness of it all, just "oh the program needs it to function", and did not find out if you can adjust settings, or if using the browser to access sites is more secure. People have said "there are no viruses on android" but perhaps not if people just give permission for a program to do whatever? Oh and if you know of a good link of apps to avoid, that'd be great.... THANK YOU!

Your best bet is to read reviews on the apps and pay attention to ratings. For things like Facebook, etc. you can use Firefox or Chrome and use the web, which you can do in incognito mode, etc. There are also several apps (that require Root access (can be a security risk in itself if you are not careful, but you seem like you're being vigilant and can think about the risk)) that allow you to pick and choose which permissions to allow. Keep in mind that some apps will not function correctly, if at all, with specific permissions turned off. I'd read up on Samsung's new Knox feature (meant for businesses, but I'm not sure if it has personal benefits or not) and things like that which can potentially increase protection.

NothingIsTrue--do you use any particular apps to gain root access? I'm completely not familiar with android as of yet.... some people were saying if you weren't careful, you could brick your device. I'm actually quite comfortable with technology once I'm familiar and am a go-to person for PC troubles in my family. I'm sure I'll feel the same about this in say, 3 or 4 months --just don't want my tab collecting dust in the meantime!

In most cases it involves a USB connection to a PC and editing through an ADB (android debugging) connection. A fairly comprehensive general source can be found here, although you should look for specific guides to your devices, as it changes per device as far as how it works and the nuances of the process. Android Central, Rootzwiki and XDA are the best sites in my experience.
