Noob question, sorry!

So, I used renewed my contract with AT&T with the HTC One X. But now that the Nexus 4 has been announced, I'm tempted to get myself one. Once the role of daily driver shifts to the N4, what will happen when upgrade time comes around? When I upgraded, the store I went to gave me the chance to turn in my old phone for credit toward the new one. Would I have to turn in my HOX for credit (since it's the phone I used my upgrade on) or the N4?

Probably the HOX. If you really wanted to (and wanted to get the most cash out of your HOX) you could try selling it as soon as you are settled on the N4 is that is in fact what you decide to do.

you would do better to sell it through another route and just pay the full price for the n4. you could certainly cover the cost of the 8gb and i am sure a bit more. for instance verizons trade in program lists the One X as being worth 130$ (I do not have imei number to try att) on ebay it looks like they are going between 300-400

You'd turn in the phone you bought from them, the HOX. They won't even know what the Nexus 4 is, they didn't sell it to you.

yeah that is why most of those trade in programs are garbage. A SGS3 is like 175 for the trade in. I could mosey over to the marketplace right now and sell it for 300 within about 3 minutes

Would it be possible to walk into the store and say that I don't want my HOX anymore, and that I'd like to use the N4 instead, return the HOX for some ridiculously low credit, or is that just absurd wishful thinking on my part?

You could sell it to Gazelle or eBay for ridiculously low credit. They even send you a prepaid shipping box.

you can still return the device and break the contract without paying anything if you are still under 14 days period.

or you could sell the device in craigslist or some site and with the money buy a nexus 4. you would still have that contract with this method.

thats exactly what i am doing. I got Nexus S from ATT a year and 2 months ago. I still have 10 months left.
I will get Nexus 4. sell my Nexus S.
