Hey I saw somewhere you can root and add android to the Nook Color and was wondering if you install it does it override the original operating system for nook or can you have them both ?

Cause I want to able to use both Barnes & Nobile and android market.

The NC runs android, it is just missing the market and the UI has been changed. Rooting it allows you to keep the existing software and add the market and change the UI if you wish. Other options are to fully replace the software or you can also put different software on a microSD card and boot that (no rooting required).

The last option sounds like what you are looking for. Here is a link for the directions.

If I want to use .CBR files and .PDF do I root or put cm7 cause I may need to use the micro sd for loads of comics so wouldn't be better to root it?

Options, options

I too am eager to hear some of the praises and pitfalls of the various methods of Android on the NC.

Reading the forums, I see what looks like three OS options:
1. Stock OS (Froyo?), but rooted for extra functionality
2. CM7 (Gingerbread?) either on microSD or internal memory (EMMC)
3. Honeycomb either on microSD or internal memory

I'm getting an NC next week and trying to do my research. I'd like to use the device mainly for web browsing and reading PDF's, but I'd like the ability to install apps from the app store. I have some beginner experience writing apps so I'd like to install my own if possible too.

Good question pr0t0 would also want to hear from the experts..

But also one more question if you boot from sd card and you save app will it save to the card or nook and how does it work after you take the sd card out ?

Its hard to find what each os does most of the info here is how to apply it and not what it does but Ill just root the device and test it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I understand how frustrating it can be when people ask the same questions over and over. I humbly submit to you that when that happens, perhaps the well-known answers to these questions have not been made available in an obvious place.

Or perhaps the questions are not completely read or understood. For example, I asked for a contrast/comparison between the various methods of altering the NC. You in turn pointed me to a how-to on rooting. I read that thoroughly, and I'm no closer to an answer because the how-to did not address the other methods. Since the guide was titled "How to Root Your Nook Color" and not something like "A Primer on Modifying the Nook Color", it wasn't something I was likely to read to find my answer. Now after doing so, it seems I made the right decision.

As it is courtesy in all online forums, I did search for my answer before posting the question. I certainly did not read every entry, but I did pour over the Stickies and the first few pages of individual questions.

I have yet to find an answer to this question, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

A little information

I too have had some difficulty finding what I wanted on several forums. Too much information, and sometimes something missed. I consider myself well schooled in windows, but am also a novice in android--that is why I purchased a color nook to play with. I have not rooted the nook as of yet--the articles on this site are great, and the help from most people is greatly appreciated.
I decided to boot from an sd card for the time being. I have run android 2.2, CM7 and 3 from an sd card boot. I did not really care for 2.2--a little awkward, but still ran rather well. Loved 3, for its interface, but really not ready for prime time---slow with some glitches. I am now running CM7 and find it really good. Probably would run faster from nook memory, but ok for what I do. Market was easy to install, and works great. Have downloaded many apps from both market and amazon apps. The apps install on the sd card. I am using a class 10, 8gb card, and it seems to work well. I have not investigated how the card is partitioned--a member said four??, but there is considerable room for additional files to be stored for reading by the nook. You are able to access the sd card from your nook. I had dual boot when running 2.2, but have not found a source for this for CM7--probably already done, where??? Like I said a novice. Since the nook boots from sd card, and you wish to use files that are stored on the card for reading with your nook, you would have to install your card AFTER your nook boots. Hope this helps some.

First of all, Nook color runs stock 2.1 android operating system(aka Eclair, not froyo which is 2.2). Rooting doesn't override the original os of nook color. Rooting allows you to have access to Nook color tablet capabilities. It will install google android market and leave Barnes and Noble reading capability intact, but instore books browsing is affected as far as I know. From your last sentence I think you will need to root your nook color to have both Barnes and Noble reader and google market. Warning: Rooting will void warranty! Check youtube videos on Nook color for visual step by step instructions.
