Not as happy with the lack of stuff in the pull down menu.

I was brand new to Android when I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 with ICS. I liked the menu at the bottom which had a lot of different choices for stuff, it seems very intuitive.

Now that I traded the Tab in for a Nexus 7 which has Jelly Bean, I'm not as happy with the menu (now at the top) which only has screen rotation and settings buttons. It seems like it went into the wrong direction. I never felt that the menu was cluttered on ICS, so I'm not sure why they changed it.

For some reason they choose to use phone layout in Nexus 7, i remeber also in on Google IO Android firechat they said that this is how Android on 7-inch screen should look like. Android normally automaticly check screen size to determent which layout to use, so i assume this is change in jelly bean.

I'm not seeing the correlation between the two issues. On the Tab with ICS the menu was the same whether it was in landscape or portrait mode.

My contention is that the menu is empty in JB while it more functional in the older ICS.

We talking about exact same thing :p Android have 2 system layout modes (except Google TV mode)

Phone mode:

Tablet mode:

By defult Android have 2 modes installed in and depending on screen device have it picks one of them

So one you seen in Galaxy Tab is tablet mode and one you see in Nexus 7 is phone mode (which it's not richer in notification menus as you noticed).

I just tested on emulator.... and i can confirm this is is Jelly Bean change, ICS on Nexus 7 screen specs run in tablet mode, JB on phone mode..... so i figure all 7-inch tablets will be like that for now on (or else manufacture will change).

Only way around it is modding ( you can run tablet mode on normal phone if manufacture didnt deleted some system files in there stack build), i findded this showng few methods to get tablet layout on Nexus7:

Still, it's not what I am talking about.

When my Nexus 7 is in portrait mode (whether it's locked that way from the factory or if I use some method to unlock it) I would be happier if the menus were as robust as my other tablets with ICS are when they are also in portrait mode.

It seems like JB went backwards instead of forwards.

Are you talking about the lack of toggles for wifi, bluetooth and such? If thats what you are talking about it isnt the change from ICS to JB, its the change from Samsungs touchwiz rom to Googles Pure AOSP android. Those toggles are something that samsung adds to its devices in its own version of android, and arent actually native to the stock version of android like on your nexus 7. You can download apps to add them, i like notification bar deluxe. The lack of toggles in the notification bar is the only thing i really miss from samsungs touchwiz.

I like battery widget reborn. Not only does it give you an expandable notification widget with battery stats, you can customize 3 switches. It's free, give it a try.
