Not good news.....

You may think your speaker and buttons are fine but you won't know for sure until you compare them to the new version. Side x side.

This, the removal of dedicated sms for unpolished Hangouts, the increasing number of complaints in Play Store reviews of Google Apps... I want Rubin back :-\

Thought I was pretty much screwed but got off phone with google and since i purchased from the play store they are sending me a replacement. I am past my 15 day window but they are aware of the issues and are honoring replacements.

I'm OK with my Nexus 5 and don't have any issues or problems with how it works for me. Granted those issues are definitely problems that need fixing, I'm not upset that I purchased the first wave of devices that got shipped out.

Of interest, I called up and spoke with a female support rep @ Google about a completely different device (my Nexus 7) when we concluded that business I mentioned the redesign and she completely agreed that it was sort of unfair to do that and not make original buyers whole.

She is going to do an RMA and hopefully I will be sent out a redesigned unit.

For me, it's not really about the added functionality (if there even is any). It's the fact that they consistently release devices that aren't ready to be released and correct it later on. The changes they made really don't bother me that much as my phone works just fine.

Most flaws are not found until millions of customerget device and check....smaller holes in the speaker and mic are just small over sigths. The loose keys are what you should worry about. Loose buttons will cause issues, the others are small "niggles" in my opinion.

I've had my phone for over a month and never thought the speakers were a problem. I also think there is nothing wrong with my buttons. They don't wobble and aren't loose. Perhaps it was only certain phones that had that problem? Or perhaps the design adjustment was implemented a few weeks ago and we just noticed now?
Ditto...my buttons are fine as well. Speaker sounds fine too. Whatever the problems are, they were not universal.

completely agree! The speaker grill is no big deal. It will never render the device unusable. Loose buttons on the other hand can. I have a real cell phone button phobia! That's why I like my G2 so much. I never have to press a button. Double tap on and single tap off.

How do you know which one is which?

This question proves my point from before. If the changes aren't obvious enough to tell, then why is it important enough to get angry over? To answer your question though, the easiest way would probably to see if the power and volume buttons have any play in them. If they do, it's the 1st model. If they don't, it's the newer.

I don't think anyone is disputing that the changes are minor and may not be a huge deal to most people using the device. Google/LG must have felt it was a necessary change and the fact that they did it post-launch is the part that is off-putting. Whatever issues they feel the device has have to be universal otherwise there wouldn't be a redesign at all, but more of a quality control effort to make sure there's more consistency in the devices they're releasing.

You can all put away your pitchforks, but a level of irritation should be expected considering this is the second time they've done this.

I bought my Nexus 5 on day one and am happy that Google is working out some of the kinks and releasing a new hardware revision. No, I don't feel like Google owes me anything. By being an early adopter of anything, you have to accept the possibility that these kinds of things will happen.

Can you hear your ringtone when someone is calling? If not, I would send it back.

I wouldn't let it worry you. I bought my Nexus 4 a week before the price dropped, the serial number puts the manufacturing date as March this year and I have the old style (no nipples or smaller camara lens)
I contacted them and they said it depends where it was made? Mine was Korea.
They said send it back and they will send the new style. But it would mean an opened box as they would have to check?
Sounds like a fob off to me, I never sent it back.
My point is: my phone was bought just before they discontinued it and the serial number cannot lie.
Don't sweat it!

I do have a level of irritation with this whole thing. However I can only be irritated so long because then I use my Nexus 5 and I forget all about these "imperfections" because they just do not hinder the user experience for me. I knew what I was getting when I chose to pay them $399 for a 32 GB Nexus 5. Incidentally, that's exactly what was shipped to me after I paid them for it. So how can I REALLY get upset at them for trying to make some very miniscule alterations that MIGHT provide a better user experience for some.

Just wait for a few weeks when people start complaining about the speaker grills cracking because those large, close together holes have compromised the strength of the plastic......

Or stay away from forums! I went from being perfectly satisfied to noticing: rattly sim spring. Hissing speaker and noticing I had an old version!
I got over it of course. Love my nexus now.

Hate to say this, but I think people are being just a tad bit greedy on this topic.

Both the new version AND the original nexus 5 are great phones and the reason they are redesigning shows how Google is totally committed to the quality of their product.

Google is a relatively new phone manufacturer and like many other things they do, they do it differently than most other manufacturers.

Yes the speaker sucks... But I paid $50 for my N5 on a two year contract and the LG G2 would have cost me $300 and they definitely are comparable devices.

Despite the redesign, despite my speaker being sub-par, my nexus 5 is still amazing. It literally has a faster processor than my laptop.

The rate that technology changes is exponential but is it really fair for people's expectations to be changing that fast as well?

I love Android and I think it's great what Google is doing with the nexus series.

Just my two cents.

Mike

I would not return my perfectly good nexus 5. My moto x has microscopic holes and sound fine. It is the speaker not the holes. Also use a tpu case so the buttons are covered.

I hope you do not exchange a perfectly good nexus 5 for a lemon with dead pixels or something...that would **** me off.
