Not receiving all calls??

So I have been told by my dad and a friend that they have called me and heard my phone ring and go to voicemail - but I never received a call OR missed call. In both circumstances I had my phone either on my lap or directly in front of me on the table, but I never heard it ring. I'm not sure how many times this has happened, but both times I'm aware of, the call was important. So I'm a bit frustrated.

Any idea what is going on? I'm completely new to smartphones and have only had this one for a few weeks.

If you press the Volume Up button once, when the little volume bar appears press the gear icon at the far right. That will bring up the full volume settings where you can ensure that all of the volume levels are turned up.
If your problem is not volume related then I'm not sure what's going on. I assume that you get audible notifications for SMS and email?
