Same issue on my 8 Pro and my wifes 8. Son's 9 working as intended. Seems to be an 8 issue. Gone back and forth with google and their response was to take it to ubreakifix. I was going to wait as it seemed to break with the UI update back in Sep/Oct.

Same issue. latest beta was supposed to fix but didn't help my 9A. I have it set for adaptive charge now and it holds it to 80% until about the last hour before my alarm. I need a pitstop call prior to that and it is at 80% by then so just unplug it on way to BR.

I have "adaptive" protection off and then use routines to automatically manually control the protection modes and when charging stops, by switching between "basic" and "maximum". When my device is charging and reaches 90%, a routine is triggered to set battery protection to "maximum" (with the slide setting for that set at 80%). It seems to always stop and never restart. Everytime I've looked when taking it off the charger it shows as a bit under 90%. Later when my device gets down to 70% another routine is triggered to set protection mode to "basic", so the device will try to charge to 100% when next plugged in.
