Note 10 1 2014 vs new iPad air

This is why I will not buy apple products. You can get the current iPad with minimal differences and not worth spending the money. On the other had, the Mini is worth the money. The new 64-Bit processor has potential but it's only a tablet and it won't improve performance much. Hell even 85% of users on PC won't notice a difference between 64-bit and 32-bit.

I am just giving up on my 3rd ipad and going for the Samsung note 10.1 2014. I had a note 2 phone and liked it a lot, but kept it in my back pocket and it kept sliding my pants down... I now have a samsung s4 and love it. I do agree with the other posts about frustrations with the ipad, but what was left out of the list was buying their apps. Android gives you like 15 minutes to try or get your money back. NOT so with apple, you buy it and even if it doesn't work at all...it's just tough for you. You loose your money. I am sure I have waisted a few hundred dollars on apps like that. And I find more and more some are even fake apps. You will read about 10 reviews and they all praise the app. So you buy it. It doesn't even work at all, you go leave your comment to not waste your money. And no kidding...within 15 minutes there are 20 reviews on top of yours praising the app. Sounds like a scam to me!!! I notified apple, but I just kept finding more and more. I like that Android is honest and will let you get a refund if you don't like a app!!!

Hi,
I am currently looking to buy a tablet and am split between the iPad Air, the Note 10.1 2014 and the Lenovo Yoga Tablet.
I never owned tablet before neither have I ever used one. (hell I don't even know why I want one.)

Well since I own the Note 3 + Gear, I was wondering if there would be any point in getting the Note 10.1 (2014) since it's pretty much a large Note 3 and maybe I should go for something else instead?

I was leaning towards the Yoga Tablet because it has a sick stand, keyboard and front facing speakers but I'm not sure about the specs on it (1 GB RAM, Android 4.2?)
Overall I'm actually completely undecided and slightly confused.

(edit: wow just noticed Lenovo is using Ashton Kutcher to channel Steve Jobs for their product)

The Lenovo Yoga is a budget tablet and sports a 1280 X 800 screen, which is low res by today's standards. That in and of itself is a deal breaker.

If speakers are important, the Note 10.1 2014 ed has very good side firing stereo speakers instead of the mono rear firing. The reviews are impressed with the Note speakers.

I'm just jealous that the iPad Air will be much better supported in terms of accessories from companies. Great looking cases are already pouring out for it. I've found very few quality cases for the Note 10.1.

Sadly very true. The Note 10.1 has been out for over 3 weeks yet I've yet to see any keyboard covers/cases made specifically for this model yet only a couple days after the iPad Air was announced, Logitech already had a line of keyboard covers and cases announced.

I've returned my Note 10.1 as I couldn't live with the bluetooth keyboard connectivity issues outlined in another thread (primary reason though there were a few others as well) but this issue also played a part.

On a side note, when I was at Best Buy today returning mine, I of course had to spend some time 'window shopping' ;). While browsing, I also did a little people watching, wanting to see what people's perceptions were of the devices they were looking at or considering buying. Two things jumped out at me: 1) Far too many people really have done little to no research ahead of time and/or often don't have a good idea what they even want, and 2) While people are generally very price conscious, this seem to disappear to some extent when Apple devices come into play. Many people will buy Apple gear without paying much consideration to price--don't see that with any of the Android/Windows gear. And when they decide not to go the Apple route, they just look for the cheapest thing that catches their eye.

What's my point? The Galaxy Note 10.1 is fighting a huge uphill battle with it's current pricing. It may be every bit a competitor to the iPad but it's displayed with all the other inexpensive tablets and one comment I heard by someone who was browsing and happened upon the Note 10.1 summed up the obstacle it's facing perfectly, "if I was going to pay that much, I get an iPad." :(

This is indeed true. However, I ordered the Poetic case ($4.95) and it looks to be a GREAT compliment to the Note 10.1. I would like to see an Otterbox Defender for the Note, and maybe we'll get lucky. The fact that there are so many different Android devices makes accessories more difficult. However, with offerings like the aforementioned Poetic I'll live quite happily.

Great observations:)! I think consumers in general are more familiar with Apple. Every new tech product is compared with Apple. They do a great job with marketing as well. Even if you're not an apple fan, you can't deny the appeal they have mastered. Can't put my finger on it, but it's there! The Samsung store that has been set up in Best Buy is nice, but I can understand where consumers get lost in it especially if they are not informed. Samsung, well Android in general, has so many tablets out right now. If you're a consumer that wants a tablet but doesn't know anything about them, Apple is perfect because iOS is just iOS. Simple and clean. If you know how to use your iPhone, then you'll know how to use an iPad.

I think the 2014 Note 10.1 is a HUGE improvement from the original Note. Not only because of what's on the inside, but because of it's look. Let's face it, as you pointed out consumers go for what is eye catching. The original Note 10.1 was good, but it was nothing special to look at. People like premium looks and feel. Samsung is going in the right direction though.

I'll have to check the Poetic out. I've been reading good things about it. The defender would be a bit bulky for me, but I can certainly imagine situations where it would be helpful! :) Thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to check it out, especially for that price.

Newly purchase over the weekend. All 3 updates immediately on start up, then a factory reset. White 16g and completely stock. I haven't used the spen at all. My last tablet was a Asus Infinity which I came to hate so much it almost turned me to the dark side (apple). I went to Best Buy to compare the Ipad Air and the Note 2014, with full intentions of buying the Apple. One of my biggest gripes with the Asus was the lag. After reading about the lag on the Note 2014, I didn't see me coming home with a Samsung. Well I played with both until I was bored (approx 20 min each). Not only didn't I see a lag, but sincerely felt the Note was more fluid. Totally shocked, I walked out with nothing. Had dinner to think about it. My conclusion was the Apple didn't compare. Now that I've used it for 3 days, I made the right choice. Really enjoying this thing!!!

I bought the Note 10.1 on launch day last month. Then when the Air was announced, all my friends and wife got so excited and I kind of went with the flow and hype, so I returned the Note (it did have a lot of lag at the time).

I bought the iPad Air the day it came out. Froze my **** off waiting for Best Buy to open. Got myself one and the wife. At first blush, it wasn’t much different from the iPad 4 I had sold a few weeks ago (which had iOS 7 on it).

Yes, it was thin and light, but not as impressive as what all the reviewers were gushing about. For my job, I need to be able to annotate and review hundreds of pages of PDF’s during hours-long meetings. The iPad was great for reading, the apps look great as usual (GoodNotes), but annotation sucked. I couldn’t write accurately with the fat stylus I had (and I have one that is considered a “thin” stylus for tablets) it was really frustrating me.

I returned the Air yesterday and went back to the 2014 Note 10.1. It’s night and day. All the lag I remembered was gone (probably because of the 3rd update). It is as smooth and good looking as the Air? No. But it’s MUCH more work-friendly, the S-Pen is about as accurate as pen on paper, it’s light and thin enough (although truth be told, it feels like a brick compared to the Air), and the Samsung Book Cover gives it a sleek and minimalist look. I also watch a lot of media (TV shows, movies) on flights for business, and nothing could be easier than loading a bunch on the 64GB card I bought with it, instead of having to convert everything and load it through stupid iTunes. I have no lag whatsoever, except for waking. For some reason that takes 2 or 3 seconds, and it’s annoying. But the good FAR outweighs the bad.

My wife loves her iPad and doesn’t want to switch. But she doesn’t use it the same way I do.

If you want a productive machine with easy loading of media, go with the Note.

Mine has wake-up lag too (among other things), but I still love the thing. You're right about the stylus being as good as pen and paper! It's awesome!

I'm thinking about doing a factory reset on mine and starting fresh to see if it'll cure some of the lag and battery issues. That fixed the battery problems on my Note 3.

So if you didn't need the S-Pen that badly, what tablet would you prefer? iPad Air or Note 10.1?

I love the Note series, but went with the iPad Air simply because of size. The Note is totally awkward in portrait mode.

Do you find iOS to be restricting your usage in comparison to android?

I did the same. I had note for three weeks and as much as I like the note, I found me self liking the air better. Yes, currently iOS has its own set of issues, crashed, etc,... Thing seems to work and implemented better on iOS. I do missed spen though...

I just got an Air too (32GB LTE). I like it. Light, fast, fast, fast, light. I like switching back and forth between my iOS and Android devices (why limit oneself?). That said, oftentimes I do find iOS lacking in its focus on simplicity but will admit the hardware has a tendency to "disappear" leaving you with only whatever you're doing. Sometimes that feel weird. Sometimes I like that Android devices rarely just "get out of the way". It gives you something to tweak, tune, and beat into submission...which is the fun of it.

Exactly my situation. I used the Note 10.1 for 3 weeks, loved much about it but in the end, too many shortcomings pushed me back to the iPad Air.

Likes:
- S-Pen, while I found much of the app functionality to be lackluster (due to being tied only to the Note or Samsung devices, S-Note being the exception), I loved the accuracy of the S-Pen for handwriting notes. Also makes browsing a bit easier (less zooming on small or tightly packed links)
- Hardware materials were great, device feels rock solid and until the Air came out, was the undisputed lightweight champ.
- Beautiful high-res display
- Expandable memory
- Of course, the flexibility of Android. Android's intent system, allowing full flexibility to share with any app and the ability to customize to no end is a great benefit.

Dislikes:
- Hate the hardware buttons--makes it awkward to hold in portrait as you have to be careful to avoid pressing the buttons or if flipped around, avoid the light sensor else the screen constantly dims/brightens. I'd sacrifice a little screen real estate for on screen buttons. Just my preference.
- 16:10 display ratio--not as much of a problem on a larger device but still not as nice as the 4:3 found on the iPad.
- Bluetooth connectivity problems with keyboards. Won't go into further details here as it's been documented in other threads and site. This, and the fact that third party cases and keyboard options are limited. Suffice to say this was a deal breaker for me.
- TouchWiz. I personally despise it. I initially though it was better on the Note 10.1 vs. Samsung's phones because of the larger screen real estate (large cartoonish design less irritating on a larger display), it's performance wore me down. It's a bloated mess, using 1.7-1.8 GB RAM right after startup. And yes, there's lag. It's not stop in the My Magazine app, very prominent in Gallery and rears it's ugly head occasionally throughout all other areas.
- Android tablet apps still have a long ways to go to match iOS. Some users may not have issues as they have all of the apps they need but many of the one's I use are either subpar to their iOS counterparts or simply don't exist.

Slightly, but it's quickly outweighed when taking into account overall feel of the device and performance and the better apps. I really wanted to love the Note 10.1 and despite my problems, it's really not that far off. Samsung needs to stop trying to include any and every possible feature they come up with, stop addressing lag by throwing more power at it and focus on optimizing their skin and software. Do that and it would be an infinitely better experience. The app situation will just take a bit more time and considering more and more people are starting to choose Android for their tablets, hopefully it won't be that long.
