Or at least I'm assuming it's not turning off because I keep going over my data limit of 1 GB even though we're still quarantining here so I've been on wifi for the past almost 3 months. I have a strong wifi signal here at home, that's not an issue.
When I look at my data usage, I see that Edge has used a large amount and Android OS. I don't want to turn data off altogether because I need it active if I leave my house. I assumed that if I was on wifi, everything (except possibly MMS) transpires over wifi. I've checked settings, etc. I have to be missing something. Actually considering using MacroDroid but I really shouldn't have to. My phone should be using wifi instead of mobile data automatically but it obviously isn't.

Input anyone?

Activate your Developer Options (by tapping Build Number in Settings>About Phone 7 times), then look for the Mobile Data Always Active toggle. Try turning that off.

I don't want to turn it off altogether. I just want it to not be used while I'm on wifi. If I turn it off altogether, I'll have to remember to turn it back on every time I leave the house.

I checked that, it's already off. Other than mms, why should anything require data when I'm in a strong wifi area?

You can put data saver on ?Screenshot_20200606-140029_Settings.jpeg

yes, data saver is enabled but to be fair, I think an update may have disabled it. I HAD it on, but had t re-enable it. Even with it off though, I just don't understand why ANYTHING should need mobile data aside from MMS?

You have Google play store that uses both WiFi , data to get accurate location , stuff like that . There will be always something that wants to use data , it could be if WiFi signal gets weak then it relies on data .

I don't believe that setting turns it off altogether -- I think it will turn the mobile data off only when there's a valid wi-fi connection. Once the wi-fi connection goes away mobile data turns back on -- but there might be a slight gap or lag when the phone makes the transition. By keeping mobile data on all the time, that makes the transition smoother.

I agree. Only MMS, and carrier app initial device authentication, should require mobile data usage. I have the same settings and I constantly have the mobile data Icon though I only see minumal activity and usage is low. I may well go back to my tasker script to turn it off when Wi-fi is connected though.
