Note 3 just got toast

the battery is original, the power suit is third party and is on standby sir. :)

I was gonna say definitely a 3rd battery issue, so a worry. Samsung or Anker only for me.

Except now it WAS an original battery, and I don't know what a suit is. Unless it fits like a suit and can add to overheating.

He basically has an extended battery that also acts as a case for the phone. So you put the phone inside this PowerBank case and the case itself has its own battery. Even when you plug in the phone... technically you plug the charger into the extended battery case and the case plugs into the phone.

the nurn smears indicate though that it is far from the suit, the suits plugs are at the middle left back side of the phone and it had no smears, the one that had smears are the little holes in the upper left corner of the battery and at the ext sd card slot and the suit is still fully functional (tried to charge it and it was still in a full status) so umm is their any way that it might actually affect the overheating process? i am not sure of this things sir (that's why I am trying to get as much comments and tips as possible) umm any other factors u might see about this case sir? so i could trry to study it all here and maybe arrive at a certain conclussion. :)

Apple manufacturers the battery to expand so that it won't explode or leak. I don't know how Samsung manufacturers the batteries though.

Third party batteries might not be manufactured with such a safety measure.

Something to consider, an official Samsung Galaxy Note 3 battery costs $6.50 to manufacture. So third party battery is a good place to make money, especially considering that some manufacturers will cut corners so the battery is even cheaper to manufacture.

I'm willing to bet that Apple has a patent on it, although I think I recall something about if the patent is a safety design then they insist that technology be shared (for a small fee I'm sure).

I actually noticed my phone was getting extremely warm and wasn't holding a charge (I posted up in the "note 3 not charging" thread). I performed a reboot and began charging via the wall charger. Thus far, the phone is back to normal temps and is charging correctly. I sure hope I'm not having the same issues the OP had, but if my phone goes kablooey, I'm going to make sure that I explain to Samsung that my Superman 1st edition mint comic was sitting near the phone, as was an original Rembrandt painting, a few signed Michael Jordan rookie cards, some Babe Ruth signed baseball cards, and Ralph Nader's business card with everything but his number burned off...

glady sammy has that feature too that's why i really doubt that it was a battery issue or a power bank issue :) but i still put it in consideration :)

Well if they don't have this safeguard then they must have something else. Having batteries explode is a major liability for any company.

I and I think everyone will be very keen to learn if you are ever given a proper explanation.

I agree we are only compoynding your misery by speculating wildly at times and not seeing where the heat started. Sorry.

It would be good if you found an expert in the business or a top repair store that could have a quick look for free and give an opinion. Without voiding any warranty before returning the phone.

I think we all hope you find the cause.

I was going to speculate that it was probably his Netscape Navigator app, but I figure he's been through enough....

Struggling with that joke. But that's going back. Didn't have a pc then.

Lets get back to your big pink thing. Near any heat source?

Netscape navigator was a very popular browser in the 90s,but it's popularity was short lived.

Why are we in some sort of death spiral here with trying to figure out how the phone became "toast"?? Just get a new phone through warranty...problem solved.

Did anyone notice that he said it was the area near the SD card and that there was a burn mark in the shape of the SD card? Then he stated that his SD card as a Sandisk?
The same SD cards that I've seen people on every Note 3 forum turn out to be using when they talk about how their Note 3 is heating up. It's always the older Sandisk cards that did this, I've not seen any other brand have this problem, and the newer Sandisk cards have been fine.

As to batteries, don't get cheap off brands. Stick with quality brands. Sometimes you do get what you pay for and with LiOn you get overcharge and over-discharge, and proper venting in case of overheating. You might not get those with the cheap crap, not to mention those are likely to have thir mAh rating exaggerated quite a bit anyway so all you're really buying is a bigger, dangerous, battery that doesn't even give you a much longer runtime.

getting a new phone is easy, but what really concerns me is that if am unclear of certain facts about how it actually happened it may happen again and i don't want to experiment on the new phone (it would be a real hassle if it goes toast again) and worse is if it becomes a total live fire while i"m sleeping, and it's fine talking about it again and again i don't feel much misery now, i got over it, and right now i am just trying to search for a good, if not near a good solution for that said problem, at least if i get enough ideas i might actually pinpoint the problem (or pretty much get near the root of it) and actually have an idea how to avoid it in the future. And who knows, this might help other people that might be buying a note 3 too ^_^

prevention is always better than cure..err..repair/replacement. ^_^

I did consider that option, but then, I'm in a place where it's even hard to look for someone who can trouble shoot basic stuff (even on big stores, i brought it to where i bought it and the guy there looked at it tried to charge it and seriously i think he does not even know what he is doing or what to do with it and then he just said (in verbatim) "okay we take this to service center, you go back 10 to 15 days" and i was like "umm..so like what do you think happened to it?" and i received a "we take this to service center" and he wrote down "NOT WORKING" on the explanation blanks of the service center form, i doubt he even understood the things I told him).

but those ideas that you guys are giving me are really helping a lot when i try to compile and compare them ^_^

thank you so much to everyone ^_^ hoping to read more ideas in the coming days while I'm waiting for my phone back ^_^

Hi, I am kind of terribly depressed right now, i bought a Samsung Note 3 (N9005) december last year and just about 20 hours ago I woke up and it is not working anymore..it had this burned smell and a smear of something that got burned on the backcase (in the area in fron of the ext sd card, and it kindof even has the shape of the sd card slot) and i really dont know what caused it.
I just left it on standby as i normally do before i slept, it had about 70% battery level so i am pretty sure i did not charge.it, and morning came the thing is not working anymore. It has a warranty but i really would like to know what might have happened to avoid it in the future(should it have burned with a live fire i would have woken up with my whole house toast along with me) it really worries me.
Here are some details before i slept (if it helps)
it has a power bank cover (turned off that time,i am very sure) and has a full battery (used only once a week)
It has a 16gb ext sd (sandisk class 10 that had this "compatible with android phones" thing)
it has a lot of apps (but not much as it cannot handle)
Few widgets
Am using a buzz launcher in 7 pages home screen
power saving mode on
Backlight display below 1/4
Wifi was off
Mobile data was off
gps off
Background app that is always.on are just th defaults and the applock thing
Cleaned the memory before put on standby

I hope somebody can help me, am afraid of using it again..:'(

Toast is good with butter and oatmeal.
