Can the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge power the Samsung Gear VR instead of the Galaxy Note 4?

No. The Galaxy VR only supports the Galaxy Note IV.

I was contemplating on the edge, but lack of VR support plus premium over a small gimmick isn't helping the sale take off for me.

Same here. I wanted the edge but no vr is odd. Makes me wonder if they have much faith or interest in the edge.
