Note 5 won't recognize my thumbprint to unlock

My new Note 5 will not recognize my thumbprint. Had the phone for 3 weeks and this is the first time this has happened. Applying my thumb to the scanner/button the same way I normally do however now it is not working. How can I get into my phone at this point?

Welcome to Android Central! Enter your backup password, which you were required to create when you first set up fingerprint unlock.

...once you get into the device, via your backup password, I'd suggest, recreating your fingerprints. Also, do you have a case on the device now?
If so, often, your finger angle is slightly different with a case. Just saying.

I came from a 5S and I much prefer Apple's set up when the finger print scanner won't recognize your finger/thumb print it going straight to the PIN code. The backup password is annoying, why can't we have the options, this is Android!!!
