Note 7 - Show off your photo(s) here!

I had to play around with the Selective Focus feature a little today after reading in the forum about the Note 7 vs iPhone 7 comparison. So, here are the shots I took this morning.

Great - we don't have to wait until Halloween for a software upgrade like our iOS brethren!

Maybe we should invite Phil Schiller here to see connerts' hood ornament pictures so he can figure out bokeh beyond portraits:

Form 9 to 5 Mac:

"Although we didn’t receive an expansive demonstration of the impressive new feature, the wording used in press materials suggests that the depth of field effect will be limited to those occasions when shooting photos of real people, not inanimate objects.

This means that product photography, for instance, won’t be able to take advantage of the depth of field feature. Although Apple hasn’t fully expounded on the ways that the feature can be wielded, it was very careful in its message on its website.

Phil Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, was also careful in his wording as he explained the advantages of the 7 Plus’ camera system:

There’s one other use of this camera that we challenged our engineering team to do as an extra credit project. It really was, it’s something that is incredibly challenging and takes a lot of amazing invention, but what they’ve been doing is astounding. And it’s something that’s a big breakthrough in photography, and we want to give you a sneak peak of this feature.

What they’re able to do, when we take a picture, is to use the ISP to scan the scene. To use machine learning to recognize people and faces and then create a depth map of that image from the two cameras and the software. Keep the people in front sharp in focus, and apply a beautiful blur to the background.
"

Since my Note 7 was taken away (I turned it in after the latest 'turn off' email from Samsung), I got an Honor 8 to hold me over till they re-release the Note 7. Here are some camera comparison shots. First photo is Note 7, second is Honor 8. In good light, the images are pretty comparable.

Don't want to crowd this thread with Honor 8 photos, but this is it's party trick - depth sensing second camera. I find it to be significantly better at bokehs than the Note 7's 'selective focus' feature.

I am amused by how they throw around the words "machine learning" Total bull****e, it's a catchy phrase these days, just like "AI" And Shiller didn't even know how to use it in the right context.

I am going to go use machine learning now to make myself an omlette.

I am having an issue. My still shots are amazing in any light with any setting (auto, pro, ect.) But if anything moves they suck. For example if I try and take a picture of someone walking, they are blurry as all get out. Or my son opening his birthday presents nothing but a blur of anything that was moving. I can not seem to find a solution. Help greatly appreciated.

That's not you that's a common Samsung camera issue. Shutter speed is too slow, so when subjects move it produces a blurry photo.

Go into pro mode and reduce shutter speed. Or press and hold the camera button and take a burst of shots in auto - one of the shots might be blur free.

Did you download the "sports" setting?
