Ok if I wake my phone and swipe to the right the screen opens up automatically??? It does sometimes ask for my pattern or face recognition but half the time it will open with out asking for any of those why??

Do you have smart lock set to stay unlocked when in trusted places like at home, or on body detection etc?

Also, is the phone really locked? (Either by display time-out or power button press?) If the settings are set in such a way that the phone is just idle but not locked, that would happen. Also, as jewels mentions, if you have a Trusted location/device in range that might also be keeping your device unlocked.
