Note 8 will have FPS in back :(

Apple will reign supreme in 2017 if Samsung doesn't embedd fingerprint in display. I think Samsung just dosen't want to learn from their mistakes. People still think Note devices are not safe so Samsung won't be able to recover much due to lack of innovation and likely a higher price than S8+. I just HOPE this rumour is false.

The article in the OP's post says Apple "had" problems with the in display sensor. But, in the article I read, Apple is still having issues as well as Samsung. So, not a definite that the next iPhone will have this feature either.

Doesn't Samsung make iPhone displays? I have the s8 plus and honestly it's a disappointment. honestly so is my iPhone.

I guess all that is left for the Note 8 is possibly a dual camera and maybe 6GB of RAM. Screen might just be 0.1 inches bigger than the GS8+

I thought an onscreen fingerprint reader would be a good way to separate GS8+ and the Note 8, but without it and for the extra cost, I see no point in not waiting for the GS9+. Even then, might just be a better option to look around for me since it feels like the Note 4 was the last unique phone in the Note line up.

Hopefully the LG V30 is better.

Umm......the separation from the GS8 and the Note is the S Pen. That's why it's a Note.

Because if the screen tech isn't ready, which sounds likely, then the alternative to the back of the device is below the display - which has always just sucked IMO.

I suppose. My sister has the S7 and her touch to unlock (on the home button) instead of swipe, like my Note 4, seems to work rather well.

I agree with you on the Note 4 swipe. It's certainly miles better than no fingerprint reader at all, but man is it clumsy as heck to use some days.

Look at the separation between the GS4 and the Note 3 and the GS5 and the Note 4. Then compare it to the separation of the GS6 to the Note 5 and the the GS7 to the Note 7. Compare the Note 3 to the GS5 and the Note 4 to the GS6 as well. In short, progress was always made before the Note 5 became the Note standard, but look it up.

Once you do that, see the difference between the Note 5 to the GS7/Edge and then the difference between the Note 7 and the GS8+

Really look at all the differences between those device, compare them and see where the improvements were made and once Samsung stopped caring so much about the Note line. Ignore the fact that the Note 5 had a limited release because they were trying to make the GS6 Edge the standard that year for the fall.

The entire industry was moving faster at that time. Mobile tech has plateaued since then. Everything after the Moto X 2013 has been minor iterations season over season with almost no new innovations on the hardware side. The game is all about software and the quality of hardware now, not specs.

Example, 4 years ago everyone cared about screen resolution. Now we care about display calibration. Quality of the display, rather than quantity of the pixels.

Um, we're not talking about screen resolution between those phones. I'll just quote myself from another post.

In 2013, the GS4 had the S600 while the Note 3 had the S800 SoC. GS4 maxed out at 1080p 30fps video recording and playback, while the Note 3 had 1080p at 60fps and introduced 4k recording at 30fps. 2GB of RAM vs 3GB RAM. VoLTE,

Then it was the GS5 with the S801, 2GB RAM, improved display quality over the Note 3, questionable ISO Cell Camera imo, but at least they tried something new and water resistant. The Note 4 came with the S805, 3GB RAM, a 1440p display, another new sony camera sensor, and some other changes.

Now I really didn't even have to use screen resolution in those devices, but I did so for the Note 4.

Now compare that to the difference between the GS6 and the Note 5 and then the GS7 and the Note 7. Granted, the Note 7 had the Iris Scanner...... Now compare the hardware differences between the Note 5 and the GS7, then compare the Note 7 to the GS8. Look at all the hardware changes, it's hard not to see it. I don't get how you don't see it.

Right I'm talk to you about how things has plateaued across-the-board and so the things that we are interested now are more about efficiency rather than just straight back bugs like we used to see before the plateau. Screen resolution is an example of the same trend that we are seeing on silicone and on batteries and on just about every other aspect of mobile devices. We are hardly ever going to see night-and-day differences between two separate years let alone two devices in the same season going forward.

Not a night and day difference between the S line and the Note line, but a difference. If it plateaued, then between the GS7 and the GS8 there would have been no need to switch from the S820 to the S835. No need to add a new camera sensor on the GS8 over the GS7 for example. They could have just left things as they were and not use any new hardware. Also, you saw the similar differences between the GS6 and the GS7

Yet the Note 5 had no increase over the GS6 and the Note 7 didn't even bother to wait for the S821, they just used the same S820 SoC.

Again, if you're content to getting the Note 8 as mainly a GS8+ with the stylus and the lack of upgrades don't bother you, while the GS9 gets all the upgrades, then good for you. I just find it hard to say that the changes aren't there or that the Note line is perfectly fine and it hasn't been ignored

This is based on the release cycle of the chips from Qualcomm. Plateaus don't mean that you never get new components, it just means that the differences in those components are much more minor than prior generations from a hardware standpoint. The biggest changes are in smart software, more efficient components and very incremental upgrades to the quality of the components, etc. The S9 will have almost the exact same specs as the Note 8 (and the S8), with a different SoC, etc.

Note Plateaus are and did the Note 5 age better than the GS6 with the same hardware? Samsung isn't the best at optimizing the software. Did they actually improve the software between the GS6 to the Note 5?

If that's the case, if you have an S8 Plus and not a huge user of the spen I would just stick with the S8 instead of blowing more money. Maybe even pick up the Tab s3 if the price goes down even further. That way still get the Spen.

Other than a slightly larger screen and Spen, there likely won't be much of a difference between the two phones.

Minus the Note 7 tainting the name somewhat, I do have to wonder if the s8 Plus will cut into the Note 8 sales since the Plus has the large screen and will be cheaper. Last year you didn't have a true jumbo screen to compete with the Note 7 like you do this year with the s8 Plus.

I will likely stick with the Plus. I've spent way too much on phones and cases the last two years.
