Note 9 and Portable Monitor

Hey guys,

This is a long shot and I'm not sure if anyone will know the answer and the phone isn't even out yet to test this but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm trying to completely ditch carrying a laptop around and just switch to Dex. Now I know the whole idea of Dex is you can carry your desktop with you but you don't always have access to a monitor.

In addition to my switch, I also carry my Nintendo switch around. I'm thinking about getting a portable monitor. For those familiar with portable monitors, you'll know that 95% of them do not have a built in battery. The only way to power them is either carry a plug and plug it in or you do it by your device via USB-C.

With that said, since the new Note 9 doesn't require a dock anymore, if I carry just the portable monitor and my phone, I can make my Dex setup portable.

I'm not a very technical guy but from my limited understanding, there is one major issue.

I believe the Note 9 is a display port and you need a HDMI adapter to mirror the screen. At the same time, HDMI can not carry power. USB powered portable monitor needs the power and the data via the cable.

If I connect the Note 9 to an USB to HDMI adapter (ex. https://www.amazon.com/C-Force-Mult...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU6306091), and connect a USB A to USB C cable to the monitor,

1.) Would the HDMI adapter be able to convert the visual data out to USB C to the monitor?

2.) Will the Note 9 be able to power the monitor and transfer data this way?
 
Just use the tv in the hotels. That’s what I plan to do. Most are lcds and have inputs.
 
I think DEX only works at 720p without the official samsung dexpad or whatever, and it also only lets you do 5 apps vs 20. Just something to keep in mind.

Yes, that I have no doubt that the HDMI adapter will work with the phone. The the thing with portable monitors is that most not have their own power supply, you have to plug it in.

However, they now have portable monitors that can be powered via USB c. The interesting thing about USB c is that they can carry power and data. So you can power the monitor and send the display signal just through that port. For example, if you want dual screen on your laptop, you just have to connect a USB c cable to the screen and that alone will be enough to power the monitor.

I'm not very technical, this is based on my understanding of how the note 9 works as it is similar with devices like the Nintendo switch as well. I believe the USB c port on Note or most phones is a display port and is not capable of transmitting HDMI signal. Previous phones like Note 8 S8 etc can just plug into a monitor and display the screen, however it will only mirror screen. It's not programmef to go into "Dex" mode. Which is why they require a Dex dock or station.

With the Note 9, it's probably programmed to sense when it's connected to an adapter and just enter Dex mode.

Now with the HDMI adapter I link and many similar one for gaming, there's a usb c port on it which is capable of transmitting power and data.

So the pathway would be Phone sends power and data to HDMI adapter, HDMI adapter converts data to HDMI, adapter then sends the data and power to the monitor.

The only thing is I'm not quite sure if the last step would happen.
 
While USB-C can carry power, I doubt any phone will be designed to output the
amount of power you would need for this. You'll likely need to find a display with a battery on board or one that can be powered by a portable battery. The latter will likely need a higher voltage output to be able to provide enough power over a standard USB-C cable. Unless a turnkey solution exists, you may be better off trying to modify an existing solution work. Motorola used to make a product called a lapdock that is close to what you need, but may need some modification for it to work. As far as I know they only worked with certain phones so it would require some tinkering with hardware and software at the very least.

Not true. You can do a quick search and find a $30 USB-C to HDMI converter which will allow you to use Dex on S8, S9, S9+, Note 8.

Something like this works on the older phones and will boot you into Dex mode without having the Dex Station or Dex Pad...I have one so I know it works. Dex is actually built into these phones so all the Dex stations really do is send a signal to the phone to boot it into Dex mode - you're still basically just paying $150 or whatever for the same thing the product in the link I posted does.

Now with Note 9 and Tab S4, you have everything just set up out of the box. I know on the Tab S4, you don't even have to have the keyboard cover to use Dex, you can just use the Dex toggle and go into Dex mode (why you would want to do that in Tablet mode is beyond me but you CAN do it.) The way they Note 9 is set up is the way they should have presented Dex to begin with. 90% of consumers weren't going to spend the $150 plus needed a mouse and keyboard to try out Dex anyway.
