After about an hour or so of using my phone for navigation (usually Waze) the phone gets very warm to the touch, slow to respond and sometimes freezes. Several times I have had to pull the battery and restart the phone and it still seems to run slow until it has had time to cool down. I have no idea how long this has been going on, or which update may have caused it, most of my trips are less than 30 minutes at a time but now every time I use Waze or Google Nav for an hour the phone acts up.

On a 6 hour drive coming home after Christmas, we used my wife's iPhone for Waze and I just had my Note Edge in the cupholder and it lost bluetooth connection with my car for a short period of time on several occasions.

Back in July I used the phone for Waze and Spotify at the same time while plugged in to a fast charger without any issue on two 8 hour drives so I suspect this is Lollipop related.

I have cleared the cache and did a factory reset when I went to 5.1.1 because bluetooth would not work. Any other ideas?

Is the data signal strong or weak when it heats up? If the signal was weak, it could have overheated from trying to latch onto the weak signal.

It does not appear to be a signal strength issue. It did the same thing sitting idle on my desk just a few minutes ago. I started up Waze, programmed in an address and let the phone sit after making my original post. The phone was connected to a wireless network in the same room as the wireless router and I have 3/5 bars on the AT&T signal. I even set Waze in night mode so that more of the screen was black in case the screen was heating up and causing the issue.

It's the app. I have no idea why my phone gets super duper hot within 10 minutes of using Waze. If I HAVE to use it, I use it in spurts. That app literally causes the phone to fry and I have no idea why. It's not the phone, it's the programming in the app.

Posted Via Galaxy Note Edge. Yea, the phone is perfect...

As an update to this post:

A few weeks ago, my note edge bit the dust and took the finish on my nightstand with it. The phone had been plugged in to the quick charger that came with it and got so hot that it shut itself down and would not turn back on. It actually left a ring on my nightstand that looked like a rectangular glass had been put on the wood without a coaster.

The warranty replacement (reconditioned phone) came DOA as well – it was stuck in an infinite loop of booting and shutting down. Rather than wait for another week with an old iPhone 3g, I replaced it with the Note 5. So far, I am not really missing the SD card as much as I thought I would and I never even charged the spare battery I had purchased for the Edge. The hard part is the loss of the edge panel, while it was a little finicky at times, but I used it a lot more than I thought I did.

Some backstory that may or may not be relevant:
Prior to the meltdown, the phone had been acting up a little in addition to the Waze/navigation problem and was sometimes not able to write to my micro SD card, but could access files and apps already on the card. I tried the card in my Mac and PC and both could read/write to the card but I was not able to delete files from, or reformat the card. When I tried to reformat the card, both computers told me that the card was write protected - which was strange since both computers could actually write files to the card. I had ordered a new card to see if it would solve the problem, and probably should have kept the old card out of the phone. I am not sure if the locked card contributed to the meltdown or not but since the phone is dead I will never know.

This was a phone issue, as the battery still worked, or at least produced the same boot loop with the defective replacement they sent to me.
