Note9 Spen news

I'm guessing that the "battery" in the pen will be a supercapacitor. Batteries don't charge that fast. But at least supercapacitors don't wear out with age. (Meaning that if the phone is still working 10 years from now, and on its 3rd or 4th battery, the pen will still be on the original supercapacitor.)

Using Bluetooth, though, even low-power Bluetooth, is going to eat battery - and that will come from the phone's battery when the pen recharges.

So all that's really added is the different things you can set it to do with different clicks. And you should still get at least 2 security updates a year for 2 years. Not enough to make me want to give up my Pixel 2.
Of course Samsung (and everyone else) wouldn't try to make a "Feature" out of a _possible_ drawback, now would they.

I went from a Note 3 to a Pixel XL because I found myself ignoring the Samsung baked in apps in favor of the ones I chose.
Miss the SPen all the time. But ... 1.2k I have to think long and hard about anything that dear.

I bet they'll advertise the spen click camera for selfies or group selfies. I am horrible at taking selfies and this might actually help me (when I take them, I don't care for them too much).

I use my spen for cropping photos without going into photo editor. Plus playing some games, like a small card game Spider solitaire.

When I go fishing in upstate Pennsylvania, typically by myself, I'll take 'start and finish' selfies in a slow sequence then let Google Photos stitch these together as a motion photo. Not having to hit the button on the phone would let me stabilize the phone so much easier and give the ultimate 'motion sweep' effect a better context; so, I'd like to have that shutter function on the S-Pen.

So I am reading some are worried about the impact of the Bluetooth enabled spent on battery life. Surely the answer to this would be that Samsung would enable a toggle to allow users to disable the Bluetooth functionality of the spen so that the spen works normally without the Bluetooth therrby giving users the option to save battery? Surely that's the perfect solution?

It's possible there may be a setting that works allow users to only charge the spen when the phone is on charge. Once it detects the phone is removed from a charger then the spen would not charge from the phone battery either. This would be sensible option to include for today of us who suffer from battery drain anxiety.

From what I've read, unless you constantly have the s-pen out and using it, the charge when it's on the charger should last people all day without a need to recharge.
Just like with other settings, I'm sure you could disable charging unless the phone is currently charging as well.
Some people just like to worry about stuff as well.

Will there be an option to turn off bluetooth on the Spen? Not everyone wants those features anyways.

The pen will already work "normally" without bluetooth being charged. It's a seperate function of the S-Pen.

Honestly, the new SPen features do not seem that interesting to me, and I have a feeling I won't really be using them. I mostly use the pen for marking up photos, but we'll see...

Same here. I'll try it out but after a couple of days I won't use the features again.

Just to echo what you said, The bluetooth is only for the added features which lasts about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the S-pen will need to be charged. However, all the traditional functions will continue to work in the event that you are still using the S-pen and don't charge it.

With the 3500 mah s9+ I get a full day easily and I doubt the little bit of charging of the spen will prevent the note 9 from getting more than that. There's not many times where I'm not near a charger and if so there's battery saver settings to get you by.

The Note 9 S Pen uses a super capacitor to store the charge and will use induction to charge it. It might be possible to disconnect the Bluetooth connection to it on the phone, but I'm thinking the pen will continue to search for the connection. If this is the case, it will continue to use up battery from the phone as needed.

As for how much battery it will consume, low power Bluetooth specifies a peak current of 20 mA. Assuming it uses the same voltage as the phone's battery, we're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 mAh per charge. If you fully charged it every time it ran out all day, you'll have used up 480 mAh, if it actually discharges at a rate of 20 mA. Chances are you won't be using it that often and it's possible it actually runs at a lower peak current.
