Nothing but problems, continual crashing since updating to ICS 4.0.4

My Droid Bionic is stock. Updated yesterday to ICS around 11 am (so almost 24 hours), so if it's time the phone has needed to update everything, it's had it. i am trying to avoid a factory reboot, so if any of you have ideas....

But since the update:
Crashes continually (like every few minutes), black screen often, programs freeze.

Initially I thought it was because I have a ton of text messages, and it was talking to the Contacts, and that may be slowing things down. So I tried a method suggested where I unsyched all contacts databases (google, facebook, etc), wiped them all out, only allowed google (some felt it was a facebook issue in the post I read), but that didn't work. And still no texts.

AFTER (of course) the install I d/l'd My Backup Pro, seeing if I could protect as much as possible if I do have to do a factory reset. It froze a few times too while backing up, so I did it in sections, rather than "ALL". Problem for sure with SMS and MMS.

I use Handcent SMS and stock. Cant' send or receive texts, nor will load text messages. The little circle just spins and spins and after a minute or so it freezes and crashes the phone, or a pop up message says it's not working, do I want to wait or quit. Sometimes THAT plays nice, other times it freezes again. (And I get this message on many other apps too).

I also tried doing that manual boot where I clear out the cache.

Am I doomed to do a reset?

I would do a factory reset in this case.

If you've tried clearing out caches and data and it's still acting up, a factory reset would be the next step.

Ever since I upgraded my Bionic has constant problems of freezing and rebooting. It seems to do it when I try to multitask and/or at times when I'm navigating through the phone fast. It does it SO OFTEN! Its so frustrating, GB used to handle it fine and I never had these problems. I already factory reset but it still happens. It seems like my problem is similar to the original posters, if this was the first android phone i had purchased it would have forever pushed me away ti IOS
