Notification behaviour change on FB Messenger

After a recent facebook messenger update, I’ve started getting some annoying notification behaviour and can’t seem to stop it.

For the longest time on my S10+, I’ve had my phone set up so that notifications are switched on for various message apps, but only so that the app icon appears in the notification bar and/or on the lock screen. All preview options were switched off, so there were no message pop ups while I was using the phone, or on the lock screen.

The messenger update seems to have changed that though, and all of a sudden preview boxes started popping up on my phone again. I’m in some fairly busy chat groups, and constantly having to swipe away white pop up boxes while I’m watching a video clip or trying to so something is frustrating.

But now that is has turned itself back on, I can’t seem to make it go away again. Having played with the settings, switching “previews” off only seems to take the message away from the white box and it just says the person’s name in an otherwise blank box, but it still pops up with every message.

No other apps seem to have changed, so it seems to be a problem with messenger rather than with Android more generally.

Anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas how to fix it?

I'm not currently a Facebook user but I recently read something about them moving away from the chat heads and using Androids notification system instead.

Have you checked the settings menu in the messenger app itself? There might be something in there about notifications.
