Verizon Galaxy S8 Notification for old unread SMS-S8+

Hi! I'm using the stock messaging app which was updated yesterday to 4.2.03.0/Messaging Service 4.1.23. Now when I turn the device on, it Notifies once for old unread messages (which I've already received a notification for), instead of just any newly received messages. Before the update if I turned the device on and there were no new messages received since I had turned it off, I would not receive a notification at all. Any way to revert back to this setting?

Basically-if I hear my message notification, I would like it to be for new incoming messages only.
