That's what I'm hoping for, as I have no clue at all about rooting and such (feel no need other than LED and double tap to wake and sleep).
What I'd like to know is, if you turn on LED notifications, does the ambient display still work?

You're right. I had an HTC Thunderbolt which had the notification light behind the speaker. You could barely see the light when it was on.I doubt it'd just be enabled with a firmware update. If it were meant to be a feature, why would they stick it behind the speaker? I haven't seen in person, but I'm sure it doesn't look nearly as nice positioned there, as apposed to being out on the bezel somewhere.
I bet it's there as a diagnostic indicator or something, never intended to be seen by the everyday user.
