Hi,
I am not getting that little number that is next to the messaging icon. I just spent several hours on the phone with a Verizon tech, she put me on hold to speak to Google, and the upshot is that I will not get that notification number until Google changes something. She said that everyone with this phone on Verizon is in the same boat. I'm wondering if it is true.

So..Does your text messaging ap have a little number next to it when you get a text?

I don't get it either, but then again I prefer using Textra as my messaging app. A lot more features that work super smooth and flawless. That does not show it either but some of these app developers implement certain changes to their apps if they know enough people ask about them and want to see them

Google's launcher has never done this. Some third-party launchers, such as Nova Prime, have this functionality.

But I understand the point of mistyisland not getting the notification as if you pull up a description of the app in the play store it clearly does state that the app has it included. Like I said I have not seen it either but that is because I am using Textra currently. The description also states that it is only available on some Androids. Maybe they are working on an update as it was updated last on Oct 26th.

My previous phone was a Galaxy s6, and I was very used to opening my phone and looking for that little number. The Galaxy s6 had that function. Now I have to look at a little icon on the top of the screen to see if I have a message. I am hard of hearing, so I often don't hear the audible notification.

Which app are we talking about?

And, does mistyisland realize that the default app icon cannot do this but there is possibly an associated widget that can? App icons and app widgets are not the same thing; the former are simply static images which are shortcuts to the app, the latter are "active" and capable of displaying current info such as weather, time, or message counters.

But in the default messaging app according to the description of it in the play store it states that there is a message count but it may not be available on all handsets

Messenger has been completely redesigned to make conversations easier, faster, and more fun.
Here are a few of the new features:
• Simple design, quick photo sharing, and top contacts one tap away
• Enhanced features that let you send messages over Wi-Fi or your data network, see when friends are typing, and more (some carriers only)
• Unread messages indicator on your Messenger’s home screen icon (some Android phones only)
• Android N compatibility

Truth to be told I have seen a lot of email apps coming out with the message count built into them as well, where you don't require a third party application to to be able to see your incoming messages as they are being built right into the app

Nope. But up top you'll see multiple envelopes sitting in the bar and if you swipe down you also get a list. If you have lockscreen notifications it'll show 3 and then same plus X more. So you do have some idea of unread message totals. Not what we want, but we are not completely in the dark.

Also this goes for every single app. You won't get a spark or number for Facebook or Facebook Messenger or email, etc least as far as I see.

My husband is hard of hearing and often missed the audible notification.. He now has the Light Flow app installed on his phone and the LED light notification lets him know when he has a new text, etc.

On Verizon, and yes I get the little red number. I am using Verizon's message app. What I am not getting though it was fine until the last three days, is my notification sound. Which is driving me crazy since my family and I text constantly on schedules, the baby, etc.

key here is "(some Android phones only)" - pixel is not that phone.

unread count is not supported in pixel at least with the default launcher. The update was to support other 3rd party launcher and some OEM ones

Interesting you bring up the GS6 - I had two identical GS6's, and one had the numbers (for unread emails, texts), one didn't. No way I could find to toggle it on/off. Only thing different between the phones was the carrier, so maybe it was something to do with that.

I tried messenger and have used the message plus from Verizon and neither show that number by the text icon. I do hope they fix that.

Weird that I am getting that little red number, on Verizon's message +. Hope it stays. The notification sounds come back after a reboot but
disappear again after a while. Oh well, I don't mind rebooting it. But I am interested in how come I get that little red number and others don't.

I think there might be a little confusion about the text app being used. Verizon vs Message from Google

Ah. So people who are not seeing the little red number are on the Google Message app, not Verizon's? Sorry, I did not realize that. Thanks for clearing that up.
