Does anyone know how to pull it down without swiping from the top?

I'm sure it will be the same as note 9 and other Samsung phones long press home screen on empty page , tap home screen settings and enable pull down notifications panel when swipe down

Should be under settings home screen and make sure quick open notification panel is toggled on.

If you nova , can set to double tap screen to pull down and few other gestures

I would be satisfied if they went the LG route. Just make it a fourth navigation button

Never seen how lg did it, another option is having accessibility on with a floating icon and will have that option as well as power off the device and few more .

This was on the LG G3 but they still use this option today. You can take a screenshot and bring down the notification bar with an optional button. They also have the option to stick with just the original 3 keys.

You can look into Samsung Good Lock might have something like that when enable buttons instead full gestures .

Yeah lg made it pretty handy in the navigation button back then .
