Notification sounds in stock app

Is there a way to turn off the received message notification sounds in the stock messaging app? What I mean is, I don't need to hear the notification while I am in there, using the app, just while I'm away. Gets a little annoying to hear the sound when I'm staring at the screen. Hope this makes sense.
