I have had my Optimus for about two weeks or so. I can figure out how to change my text or email notification to my own custom sounds. Where do I put my sound files at on the SD card to show up in my list of choices in the menu? My files are MP3 already and would like the email and text to have different sounds.

Turns out you can't setup notifcations from custom sounds on your SD card. The only way to change your notifications is to have the file in the system directory in question. Easiest solution would be to push the file to your phone with ADB, assuming you have rooted your phone.

The notification tones are found under:
/system/media/audio/notifications/

.mp3 or .ogg should work just fine.

As for giving email and text different notification tones, that doesn't appear to be a default option in Android. That's not to say there isn't an app floating around that would let you override it, I'm just not certain.

Oh no wait a minute. Create a Folder on your SD card and call it Media then create a folder in it called Audio, then create 3 more folders in the audio folder and name them , Alarms, Notifications and Ringtones.
Put your mp3s and ogg files in the folder of your choice.
Android will recognize these folders as a system folder and see your files in them.
:).

Menu/settings/sound to change ringtone
Gmail you must open gmail then select menu/more/settings to scroll down to select ringtone.

I personally have Homer Simpson tells me I have mail. :)

I will try that in the morning when I get off work.

That's the same method soundboards use to be able to use them as tones....
