I've had this problem on my last three Galaxy phones when using the default messaging app. If you leave a conversation open and receive a new message for that conversation, you don't receive an audible notification.

I have checked and verified the following:

• Volume is turned on / up for notifications
• Messaging app settings have notifications enabled for both General and New messages

As far as I can tell, everything that should be enabled / turned on is. What am I missing??? I've had messages sit for hours and not know there was a reply. I try to remember to back out of the conversation after sending something, but I don't always remember and not being notified is becoming an issue.

On my previous phone, I switched to the Google Messaging app for the reason that it DID provide an audible notification for new messages even when the conversation was left open. But there were some things about that app that I really didn't like so I went back to the standard messaging app when I got my new A71 phone.

I hope this isn't a 'feature'...if it is, it shouldn't be!! Any suggestions????

Thanks in advance,

It is ALL messages not just group messages. If someone replies to the conversation that is open, there is no notification at all! I try to back out of the conversation but forget sometimes...

I just cleared the data for the Messages app and that didn't change anything with the open conversation notifications. However, after clearing the data, when I accessed the Messages app for the first time, I was prompted me to turn on Advanced Messaging. I don't remember seeing that pop-up before when I first got my phone.

Advanced Messaging or not, I still don't hear any type of notification when a new text arrives for the conversation that is open.

Advanced Messaging Turned Off Notifications
But turning on Advanced Messaging apparently completely messed up ALL my notifications...where I was hearing an alert, I was only getting a vibrate. To fix this problem, I found a discussion on the Samsung User Forums. These steps worked to fix the Advanced Messaging notification problem only, not the original open conversation notification issue. 1. Go to settings
2. Go to general management
3. Go to reset
4. Go to "reset settings"
5. Reset your settings (this WILL NOT delete any personal data on your phone like contacts, pictures, accounts, texts, etc!)
6. Once the phone reboots:
7. Go to settings
8. Go to "notifications"
9. Go to "messages" app (may be under "see all")
10. Go to "new messages"
11. Change sound option from silent to what text noise you want.
12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for your General Notifications.

Long press the message app then tap info , scroll to notification then tap., each title tap and make sure it's on alert
Start with general notifications tap
Them move to new messages then tap.Screenshot_20201104-213103_Settings.jpeg

There's nothing wrong with your phone. That's the way it works. If you leave your messaging app open and the screen on, you will not receive a notification. It is assumed you are watching the screen.

There are some 3rd party SMS apps that will give you notifications even if you have the thread open. I believe Textra is one of them.

Yes, this is one of the first options I turn on when I install Textra onto a new phone.

As pointed out above, this is a feature (or not) of the SMS app you are using.
