notifications on icons

Hey guys. My hubby just went from iPhone 4s to galaxy s5. He has a lot to learn. Is there any way for app notifications to show on the app icon instead of at the top status bar?

That may be a launcher option, or individual app setting.

I have never seen that on any of my android phones.

The notifications always show as a flag icon of some sort at the top of the screen.
Then you pull down the notification bar to see what the flag is referencing.
(it's always been done this way as they say in the army )

Having the notice appear on the app icon would most likely be a nuisance and he would not see it unless that particular screen were on display.

I have most of my apps stored into folders on a home screen. Those little tiny icons inside the folders are too small to even see a flag. The folder has to be opened first.

A simple update to the app is not very important usually, and having the flag on the app icon would be useful.
Just never have seen it "yet".
