Notifications when screen is locked?

My Nexus 7 is my first Android device so I'm new at this.....

Is there a way to have some simple information displayed on the screen when its locked, like if there are Skype messages or emails? Thanks!

Yeah, there are. I'm using Active Notifications that I learned about from either Jerry or Phil. Pretty handy.
