Notifications with Bluetooth headset

When my phone is connected to my headset notifications only play thru the headset. The phone no longer plays the notifications, so if my earbud is not in my ear I miss the notification. This problem started on my Note 9 after the last big update and now that I have the Note 10+ it is that way out of the box. Has anyone found a way to have the notifications still play with the bluetooth head phones connected?

swipe down notifications and click where it says "Media" next to "Devices"... pick "My phone" as audio output.
