Nougat / Android 7.0 on your Nexus 5X ... Thoughts and Tips

I love 7.0 so far. Loaded it up yesterday and everything just "works" better. Lag is gone, battery life is much improved, notifications work better, etc. My 5x was sitting as a backup phone since I hated the stutters I would get and lag opening apps. Battery life was also just OK even though it was new. It's like a totally different phone now and I plan on using it as my DD for a while to see how things go.

I like the notification. It's nice replying to a text that way and I like how it looks. It's not anything special it's just a nice change. I also like the hot buttons at the top so we don't have to pull down the notification bar again for them. I've already used multi window so I think that will become more and more useful. I've been using my phone a little more than usual so I can't comment on Doze just yet.

I've been trying to change things like the wallpaper and sounds just to make it feel new and different since there aren't really any new changes to the look.

I do wish there was an option for dark mode. I don't get why they have it in the beta's but not official release.

If you were using the Developer Preview for N then it should still be there. I was on Developer Preview 5 before the official release and I still have night mode in my quick settings pane. 😀

Nexus 5X is the business!

Might join the beta preview when I get home and download this. No idea how long it will take for the OTA update to be released on O2, Nexus 5x here in the UK. Might as well give it as go.

I'm on EE in the UK and I've already got mine. Just restarted my phone on 22nd and it was waiting for me.

Really? Well that's annoying (no offence) O2 always seem to be behind when it comes to updates.

Used to have a windows phone and they delayed major updates on those for ages while they "tested" them.

Edit: Caved in and joined the beta programme. Downloading now.

Android 7.0 is definitely smoother and so far has no lag compared to the July Marshmallow update.

I have had a few apps just hang for no reason but overall Nougat is faster with better battery life for me. I wouldn't go back to Marshmallow at all, the new features and refinements make life easier, especially multitasking.

Battery life seems alot worse since updating to Nougat.

Any advice on this?

I'm seeing a slight decrease in battery life. It's possible its being caused by an app that isn't working 100% on nougat yet, and since the decrease is minimal I'm not overly bothered by it.

I do hope however than once we are a few months in, battery life will be improved over MM. N has been smooth and great so far so future updates can just polish it to something near perfect.

Have you tried clearing your cache? I noticed a big improvement after doing some housekeeping. I have the official release coming off the beta program. Also, I removed Facebook messanger bc I noticed its was waiting some battery even though I wasn't using it.

I cleaned the cache partition several times and even booted in safe mode and I still seem to be draining even on standby. I'd say battery life is 10-15% worse since updating to Nougat. I think I'm going to have to do the dreaded factory reset.

I had the next lock screen app by Microsoft installed. The only reason I had it was so I could have a wallpaper picture and a different lock screen image. After the update it seems that option is part of the Google launcher. Uninstalled that app and battery life is much improved.

I got the Nougat update 2 days ago for my 5x and the lag is now worse than ever! I was totally duped by reports of Nougat solving the lag issues. I can type a few words and watch the keys catch up about 10-15 seconds later. Really bad. And I really dislike the new notification panel. It is too busy with poor delineation between distinct notifications. I like being able to expand and see more, but not that it just looks crowded now when you pull it down. And my battery life is terrible on Nougat.

No one "duped" you. People reported quite different results from you. They are also using Nexus 5x phones. They also have Android 7. I wonder what the variable could possible be?

I don't even know what this "lag" is. I certainly don't have to wait 10-15 seconds for the screen to catch up to my typing. I normally look at my notifications as they come in but even if I have two or three it isn't a problem.

I have not been duped and Android 7 works fine for me.

I still love Nougat. I got it the day it came out and my battery life is much better and my lag is also better. I still get a delay opening certain apps that can last a few seconds that is annoying (mainly Verizon Messages+, yes I actually like that app!) but the scrolling typing lag is gone. I use a few keyboards too just out of boredom - Swiftkey for main, Blackberry and Google just for something different. None of those lag at all and I have to use them a lot for work emails.

I've singled it out to Chrome, Facebook, Screenwise panel, and Google Play Services as my rouge apps that keep causing battery drain and severe memory killers. My phone after updating to Nougat via OTA without beta is useless unless I reboot the phone 3-4 times a day. I want to downgrade to Marshmallow, but I don't feel like installing all my apps and inputting my user data all over again. Already did that because I did a factory reset after the initial 7.0 update. It's upsetting...

Have you tried safe mode? I use Chrome without issues, so I doubt it is that app. FB is a known resource hog, and if I'm not mistaken MANY apps use and/or access Google services.
