So I have a G Nex for work so i cant really root or unlock it so am kind of a noob. but I just got my Nexus 7 and Unlocked and rooted the bastard for the first time and am excited to see what I can do with it.

Now I am at a loss of where to go from here. Are there any roms or things I should try that you recommend? I saw some people over clock their processor? taking all recommendations. :D

Overclocking isn't ready for general use yet. There are two kernels that I've seen. The Motley kernel causes stock devices to die and the Atlantis kernel seems to take you off the update path. It could be that I installed it before it did the 4.1.1 update, but we won't know until Google tries to push another one.

In most cases you lose OTA updates when you apply a custom recovery. Because to apply an OTA patch after download the ROM has to communicate with the recovery to apply the patch. This has little to do with the kernel.

I thought so as well. I was on 4.1 and used the Atlantis kernel. The device then downloaded 4.1.1 and when it tried to apply it I got a giant red x over top of the android recovery icon. I don't know if something in his kernel failed it, if it's because his kernel was intended for 4.1.1, or that both hit at about the same time.

I'm running Motley's now. There's one issue I haven't seen an answer to and that's in power management. If the screen goes to sleep the device un-overclocks itself as part of the wake up protocol.

The few kernels available are still very young... IMO not even worth flashing just yet, I like to see a few more capabilities and stability before I dive in.

Yeah, I agree. I borked it twice already. Luckily I was able to wipe it and start over each time.

You need rom manager app. It's the easiest way to keep clockworkmod recovery up to date.

After this install a firewall to keep apps from accessing the Internet (i.e. phoning home with your location/contact information).

I went with Avast; there may be others as well but thus far this app is very nice for keeping me in control of my device:

DroidWall is the lightest and least resource hugging firewall for Android.

got a quick question.. when i root and unlock.. (with no roms) will i still get the ota updates?

If you don't change the recovery or install anything custom, yes.
