Odd situation with Gmail and POP3 email accounts

I just got my Sprint Note 5 this weekend...I got rid of an early released LG G4 that was a piece of crap (whole different thread needed for that issue).

I set up the phone and activated myself without any issues. As per normal Android protocol, I logged into my Gmail account and that synced as it normally would...no issues.

But then came time to log in to my companies email account...I work at Oracle so we do not use Outlook...hence we do not use Microsoft ActiveSync...we use a POP3 Outlook look-a-like.

The LG G4 would log into this just fine having a Gmail app and a separate corporate email app...and setting up the account on my Note 5 was easy too. But here is the weird issue:

My Gmail account shows up in the generic email app...but the POP3 account does not.
My corporate account only shows up in the Gmail app...along side my Gmail emails. I actually can toggle between the two:
* if I click on the three lines next to "Inbox" at the top, I get a drop down option to choose which account I want to view...POP3 or Gmail.

I hate this! What did I do wrong when I set this up? How can I get rid of the POP3 account from Gmail app and why is my Gmail showing up in the generic email app? I would like to be able to individual "new email" notification on each icon.

Please help.

Thank you all.

Did you set up the POP3 account directly in the Google app? If so, that's why: It's 'integrating' your POP3 account into your GMail account as a separate label in your Inbox, but it's still going into your GMail account.

The stock e-mail app should be entirely separate from the GMail app. I have a similar set up and I only get GMail in GMail and POP account in the stock e-mail app.

Not by choice. When I went in to add the work email, you go to Settings>Accounts>+ Add Account, the top generic email is already being used by Gmail...then you scroll down and the bottom two email apps - POP3 and IMAP are the Gmail icons...so I set up the POP3 for work and that is when it takes over the Gmail app. Gmail is in the generic app from the home screen.

At the home screen, it shows the Gmail icon...but that has the POP3 account and the generic email app has Gmail.

Is this normal?

Ummm... I think you selected the wrong option.

Go into the phone's Settings, Accounts, Add account, then select Email, don't select POP or IMAP as this will add it to the GMail app, like you said. Fill up the data and it should detect that it's a POP3 (or select Manual Setup once you've entered the e-mail address and password) , and the account is added to the stock (generic) e-mail app.

So if I do that...my Gmail account is already there. So I enter my email and password and hit next, it says "setup could not finish"...if I go to "Manual Setup", it asks me if it is a POP3, IMAP or ActiveSync account. Then, if I choose POP3 (I know it's not IMAP), then I go through the set up process and it still does not allow me to add the email account. The only way to add my work account is to go directly through the POP3 email at the bottom of the options.

I'm actually OK with this set up...but it shouldn't be this way. Very odd.

Are the server settings OK when you enter them? That is very odd indeed. I've added POP3 and Exchange accounts that way before without issues. You can try to add it directly from the E-Mail app's settings, but I believe it just takes you to the very same dialog.

Have you tried removing the GMail account from there and adding the POP3 first? It's a long shot but might be worth a try.

I tried this too...but as you may guess, it won't allow me to as I need a Gmail account for the phone. I'll keep messing with it tonight after I am home form work and report on it then. I will conquer this weird little quirk!
