Oddities following a rooting

Not sure exactly where/how to phrase this, but I will recount what I did.

- I followed a rooting process that used an HBOOT installation, followed by a PC36IMG.ZIP installation. It went well, with no errors, and seemed to have worked fine.
- The phone rebooted, and all my apps and data were where I left them.
- I checked the Settings > Applications > Running Services and got 214mb showing as available.
- I checked Settings > SD & phone storage and got 30.96Mb under Available space.
- I cannot load most application updates. I do not have an inordinate number of apps on my phone, and this was never a problem prior to the update.
- My Contacts storage size is now over 85Mb, and I only have around 1,600 contact entries. Surely I'm not using 53+K per contact.
- My Google Calendar, Gmail, and Calendar will no longer sync.

Any ideas?

hm....im not sure that your actually rooted....the phone shouldve been reset after PC36IMG.zip install. the way to check is to use ADB to check if you have SU (superuser) or you can d/l a program called Terminal Emulator

in adb (hit enter after each line):

Code:
adb shell
su

Terminal Emulator - just type su

both should return with # ...if you get $ then your not rooted

and you have 1600 contacts!?!? is that 1600 different people or a whole lot of peoples #s and emails?? you should also store them with your google account as opposed to on your phone...that might free up some space!

as for the Google apps not syncing, go into Settings >> Accounts & Sync then click your Google account...make sure Contacts, Gmail, and Calendar are checked to sync. if they are, then i dunno

Okay... it gives me a '$'... but that doesn't solve any of my problems.

And what's wrong with 1,600 contacts? I know people. :)

And it STILL should not be 85Mb just for 1,600 contacts. They are all Google Synced, and that's not the issue. The issue is that my Contacts storage is taking up 85Mb... there's no reason for that.

I can't run any of the Market updates, because there is insufficient room (it says), despite having 200Mb free according to one utility and 30Mb free according to another. WTH?

It looks like he just wanted to know if you had root first. If it is showing $ sign then you don't. Wiping cache and dalvik cache from a custom recovery when rooted might help. Its usually the first step when people try to trouble shoot.

That might have been his intension.

I would differently say you know people! lol

Okay...

First, my apologies if it seemed I was snippy. I'm def not a snippy guy. I was just emphatic... yeah, that's it. :)

Anyway... I found the solution. Maybe this will help someone else.

My guesstimate was that if the phone has a "threshold" that it uses to prohibit certain types of activity, and I had reached that threshold, then it would stop allowing things like application updates and synchronizing with the calender & contacts (because it couldn't know if I was going to add a ton of new contacts or whatever, right?).

So, being of sound mind I went into the Settings > Applications > Running (tab) and sorted by size. The Contacts Storage showed 83.5Mb. I pressed Clear Data, and okay at the warning that I was going to lose data. My first consideration was that if I was emptying the data storage, it would either sync with the data online, or I could always restore it from the SD copy I made. I wasn't going to lose anything.

Immediately after I cleared the data, a sync began. While it was running, I went in and did my app updates, and everything seemed to run a little faster, a little snappier, etc.

So... if your Contacts Storage is 83.5Mb, you need to empty that storage space and start again. BTW, it is now using 2.4Mb of space... which is a bit more sane.

Now, about my contacts. I have been collecting contacts since I began in business. I learned my lesson by not keeping a record of people when I was younger, and later in life I found I needed some people from my past and wasn't sure how to reach them. No more. I have over 1,600 contacts because I have kept some record of almost everyone I've had any dealings with, personally or professionally.

And thanks to everyone who responded.

I will be rooting my phone... but I'm going to wait to see if the contacts storage grows any over the next several weeks. :)
