Official case finally available!

I saw the in the other thread. Still waiting to see how the angle it stands at looks in real life. On my Poetic slimline I go back and forth between the 2 angles it provides because of screen glare.

The angle is to steep for typing & looks like it would just slide out & fall flat on a smooth surface at anything but a almost vertical angle. Plus it would not work well in your lap if at all. My Supcase has 4 angles that allows me to put the screen at just the angle for viewing and typing, works well in my lap & provides protection on the back, corners & sides. And it was only about $12. I'm just not seeing anything with this cover that makes it worth $30.

This cover is really for people that want to maintain the form-factor of the Nexus 10 and protect the screen without adding any bulk. As Matias said "Yeah, but it's a beautiful piece of plastic." ;-)

It's not for everybody. Few things are. Mine has arrived at home, according to my shipping tracker. I will try it out when I get home. I already have a case on my Nexus 10 that covers the whole thing and provides the multiple viewing angles that others have touted. I'll try this out and see if I like it. If I do, I'll keep it. If not, I'll send it back. Simple as that.

Okay, after playing with it a bit, I have concluded that it does the job it is intended to do (protect the screen). The fit and finish are good. The outside surface is like a vinyl plastic texture. The inside (against the screen) is a soft felt-like material. Nothing to write home about, though. It is certainly overpriced. It is designed so that it does NOT cover the speakers (so you can listen to podcasts while the screen is protected). That's a good thing.

It does have to be stood up at a rather sharp angle if you are on a slick surface like a lacquered night-stand. Surprisingly, that's mostly due to the underside of the tablet itself (which wants to slide out towards you on slick surfaces when standing). The Bookcover (that's it's official name) has a rather sharp edge that stays put when standing on all but the slickest surfaces. If you place a sheet of paper on the slick surface, that will mitigate the problem and you will then be able to stand the tablet up at more inclined angles. On laminate or wood desks, I had no trouble standing the tablet up. If, however, you require more than simply standing it up to watch a movie/video, the Bookcover is not for you.

I like the low-profile nature of it. I think I'll keep it.

Mine arrived yesterday and i came to the same conclusions. One thing is the back of the cover, where it snaps into the Nexus 10, does have a slight ridge on it so when rested on it's back the device will sit ~1cm higher than it normally would without a case giving it a slight angle.

Today at lunch i will try it on my breakroom table [likely with a napkin underneath to preven the N10 from slipping and see how it does.

In comaprison to my Poetic Slimline here is what I noticed.

  • I had forgotten how small my N10 was without the cover and what the rubberized plastic felt in my hands.
  • The book cover really ONLY protects the screen. This will not save your N10 from a fall where it strikes edge first.
  • With the Cover open and flipped around to the back, it covers the device branding. Google should have branded the inside of the cover with the word NEXUS or ANDROID so people who see it know it isnt an iPad.
  • While I know the magnets are in the cover I can't "feel" then the way I could with the Poetiic cover.
  • I wish I had thought to check the Wifi signal strenths Before and After each Case.
  • With the Cover closed I can still press the power button, this strikes me as odd. It may be an asthetic over function choice
  • My pogo charger snaps in much easier

I expect I will keep using the book cover and keep the Poetic Slimline if i feel the need to take the device anywhere more "rugged" than work or home.

I actually like the absence of branding. Wanting to show off branding makes me feel like an Apple user.

Make that a modern Apple user, I liked them roughly up until the point that they changed the orientation of the apple logo on the laptop screen so that it's upright for other people rather than the original upright for the laptop user on opening it.

Got the official Nexus 10 Book Cover Case. On the back of the packaging the bar code sticker shows date of manufacture as Nov 26, 2012. Has Google just been sitting on a stockpile of these for 4+ months before releasing them??

13+-+1

I generally prefer a nice minimalistic cover -- just enough to provide basic screen protection but not add too much bulk to an otherwise sleek form-factor.

I probably would have picked this up if it had been available at launch, but honestly, I've been VERY happy with the case I did purchase, the Fintie Slim Fit Folio Stand Leather Case Cover. Granted, it's a little more case than I generally prefer, but it really doesn't add too much bulk compared to similar style cases, the quality is very good (no fraying on the edges or seams), ports are all exposed (including pogo), and it has a nice feel when holding it. Given the current price on Amazon is only $6.99 (I paid $20 originally), I would definitely buy this again over the $30 "official" cover.

I know there's another thread regarding cases, which I believe I posted a similar review...but just wanted to toss my 2? out there for anyone shopping.

Meh...I love to hate on Apple as much as the next guy, but that's just marketing. Most PC manufacturers have been doing that for years as well. It makes sense...you already know what brand you bought, it's "everyone else" they want to advertise to -- also, it's not like people stare at their closed laptops saying, "what a great logo!"; most laptops are either open and in use, or closed and being transported.

I guess it is perspective. I want the branding so people can be educated that not all tablets are iPads. Brand it Google, Samsung, Android, Nexus. I don't care. If someone walks past me in the Dr.'s waiting room and thinks "wow the screen on that iPad looks great" that is a potential lost sale for Google because of LACK OF BRANDING.
