Official Froyo Update on the Epic on Dec 26th?

According the link: "I or someone else will always post a manual version of any update that is compatible with modified phones. So no need to go through the hassle of flashing back to a completely stock state."

I have been hoping we would be able to do the update.zip method from DK28, it sounds like we will be able to.

I can't say how the update will be packaged ahead of time, but it will be installable through one (or more) of three methods: stock recovery, ClockworkMod recovery, or Odin.

once devs get ahold of it ill make the switch, im running dk28 and have no plans on loosing root or anything like it

Froyo Update on the Epic on Dec 26th??

I truly hope this happens before December 31st as previously promised by Samsung on the Samsung Mobile US Twitter feed. A Couple of things that have me thinking.

1) Any chance it actually was going to be pushed out later than December 31st but the negative press / internet backlash lit a fire under Samsung / Sprint?

2) Why doesn't Sprint just release a vanilla build of Froyo and / or Gingerbread when ready and offer an update of their apps later? (completely optional of course)

3) Has this entire experience left a bad impression for anyone else not only of Samsung but of Sprint as well?

4) Would it have made a difference if either had come out and said "hey were having issues with x, we will try and fix it asap"

Yup. I bought my Epic on Oct30 under the illusion that froyo would be coming any day. Seeing so many other devices that already had it, or got updates during the time we've all be waiting has made me really question whether or not I will purchase another Samsung device. Coming from a Palm Pre where I got 10 (or more, I lost count) updates in a year and a half, Samsung is starting to look VERY shoddy when it comes to software support. At this point I'd be willing to wager competitors devices will have Gingerbread before Samsung even announces plans to produce updates for current phones.

I would imagine the problem lies more with Samsung than with Sprint, if only because none of the other Galaxy S-based phones on any other carrier have been updated either (with the exception of the Vibrant on Bell and look how *that* turned out).

I will agree, though, that Sprint could have stepped up and said "Hey, we've had a problem with the update but we're on it. Please be patient."

I guess it's the whole non-confrontational thing. Sometimes I wonder if these companies are thinking "If we don't say anything, maybe nobody will notice that we're late sending out the update."

As far as number two is concerned -- it's simple. Because it's Samsungs Phone, and it runs TouchWiz. Although carriers do have choice in what stays and what goes, I don't think we'll ever see an "option" to have either stock or TouchWiz (or Sense, MotoBlur etc). OEM's use these as a way to differentiate from one another.

Number three -- ehh. Although I don't have an Epic, my Fascinate runs just fine on 2.1 and does what I ask it to do when I need it to do it. I am patient.

Number four -- definitely. No doubt in anyones mind that a little more transparency would have alleviated some of the Samsung bashing. Of course, you're still going to have the ones who are totally impatient and just have to have it *right now*.

Here is a question - if we have updated to dk28 and rooted, what happens when the update comes out? Will it show available and if I want to go with that for better battery performance, I know I will have to roll back.

But will it show available? And just not download and install?

And yes, I know rolling back I will lose root.

What's silly is the entire cellphone market. I should be able to buy a device with no contract that can work on either CDMA or GSM either with or without a keyboard from any of the leading manufacturers.

Seeing as how that day will NEVER COME...I won't be dreaming of an HTC or Moto device that is 4" either IPS, SLCD or SAMOLED w/ sliding keyboard on every (ANY?) carrier anytime soon.

I think that if Samsung had acknowledged the issue the complaints would have turned to "yea...they are acknowledging the issues but where is the fix!! This is ridiculous...why didn't they test this before releasing it? Samsung is ****ty for putting out a bad product and trying to make it better by apologizing". I've read enough of peoples comments to know that people will complain about anything.

Forget Froyo......I want GINGERBREAD! - The Nexus S has it and I would expect that phone to be similar to the Galaxy S lines for much of its hardware. (With the exception of the radio itself, the curved screen shouldn't make much, if any, of a difference in the OS itself). - My background is IT (programming to be precise), one of these days I really need to take a crash course of development under Linux.

Froyo is nice, but there will be a lot of letdown people. I had froyo on the EVO for some time and is at best a marginal upgrade. I got caught up in the hype and frenzy and then when I got it there was no way it could live up to the excitement. Just don't expect something amazing.

I am reading that alote of people are have issues with there epics. Are most of these problems from day 1 epic owners cause I got mine mid november and it works great. So if froyo is just a small upgrade then I don't see why there should be any problems as long as they fix the ones they had with the captivate earlier this month.

The Screen on the nexus S isn't curved, the glass is.

Bingo, couldn't have said it any better myself. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to be disappointed, seeing as how the hype surrounding Froyo is a bit overbearing if you ask me.
