Snagged Drod's 1.5gz kernel from ROM Manager and pulled a 2495 on quadrant and 53 mflops oj Lonpack

Drod's 1.5GHz here. Reads as 1516MHz :)

2280 on Quadrant. I'm pretty happy with it!!
**edit** also 1300/1834 on Smartbench

Also--what is within safe operating temperature for the battery? Slash the CPU? Are there downsides to overclocking these babies?

I went with Drod's as well. Mainly because I figured 1.5ghz was one tenth of a ghz less potential for problems, if there should happen to be any :p

That is the only overclocked one as of now AFAIK. The numbers on Adrynalyne's are version numbers not ghz, they are not overclocked.

Added SetCPU to my phone. Just allllmmoost touched 2500 (2497) for a Quadrant score. yay :)

Excited to see how the battery holds up tomorrow. Will post a graph!

There is one. Sorry if you saw first comment before edit, I misread.

With the 1.6 ghz test I did this morning. The biggest problem I saw is thermal protection kicks in with these overclock kernels (probably drod's too), which degrades performance until it cools down.

I'm a noob to all this so please excuse my ignorance. Am I correct in assuming that you need to root before overclocking?

adrynalyn's ROM manager kernel isn't OC'd, but he DOES have a 1.6ghz version. You just have to know where to look... :p

My battery is heating up to 40 degrees C under work (as opposed to around 32 without 1.5GHz). On the battery itself it says 60 degrees is max. That should still be safe yes?

is a rooted droid, like an unlocked blackberry?

No not even close to the same. An unlocked Blackberry only gives the Blackberry capabilities to work on any cellular network. A rooted Android deals with loading Customs Roms and Kernals. Plus it gives you customization that you normally wouldn't have when your not rooted. Like deleting bloatware and such.

bloatware being the apps that I don't use, want, and can't uninstall I take it?

a rooted Droid sounds like every blackberry, I can do all that with any blackberry.

Ive had the Storm 1 and the Storm 2 and I had nothing but trouble with both phones and they couldn't handle no more than like five apps before they started to freak and become all slow. So my switch to Android was well worth it. Now I can actually use the phone like a smartphone. If Blackberry doesn't step on it they will be left behind in this smartphone world. Ill take a rooted, custom ROM and Overclocked Android over a Crapberry any day.

Yes, because you need to install a custom kernel, which is the part that requires root access.

Also: Battery Life isn't looking too good with Drod's 1.5ghz kernel...

Down to 81% after 65 minutes of use on 3G:

35-40 texts, one phone call, and moderate data if you count the apps I've downloaded and browsing as one category. This, for me, is about a 300% drop in battery performance.

Now that number is skewed obviously, since I've barely taken time and tested it, but I NEVER saw my battery drop 20% even close to that fast before..

Edit: Just installed CPU tuner and gonna see if it makes any difference throughout the rest of the day. I'll update with how it went later tonight.
