Android Central Question

I am a new user of Android Auto. I wanted to be able to navigate using the Google Maps platform without having to use a data plan. After various attempts I was able to accomplish this by
1. prior to connecting cell phone, open maps, go to offline maps and establish your map area and type in a destination.
2. connect to android auto.

This works great, and you see and hear everything through the car's head unit display but you have to disconnect and set up a new destination if you wish a change, then plug back in and you are off to the races. The only caveat I noticed is that you cannot search for POI's within your area. There may be a way, but I have yet to find one.

All else works as it should i.e. Radio/media play and will be muted by turn by turn voice interruptions from Google Maps. You are still offline, some other voice commands from the icon on your steering wheel may not work.
