Hi,
My name is YoungChrisG and I am an Androholic. I am not writing this in the attempt to disway anyone from iOS or iPhone nor am I flaming the platform. I only wish to express my personal feelings on my change of platform and my regret in doing so.
Now that that is taken care of, :p, my story.
Due to unfortunate circumstances my wife and I both lost our jobs and basically lost everything and now live with my father in law (YAY). Among other things we also lost our cell phone service. My wife and I both had Motorola Droids (the O.G.). In fact we had had them since their release. My wife went from an LG nv3 and I like soooooo many others stepped up from the atrocity that was the Storm.
Needles to say I have never in my life loved a phone like I did that one. My wife couldn?t understand my nerdness lol but used to laugh at how many times a week I would change roms and have to reset up my phone. Anyway we all know why we love our Android phones so I will skip the reminiscing.
When we lost our service with Verizon (which is regrettable in and of itself) my mother didn?t want us to go without phones so she decided to put us on her AT&T plan and get us smart phones as long as they were reasonably priced. So my wife liked the design of the Torch and went with it which was a whopping $0.01. I on the other hand went back and forth on my choice.
You see, I?m not only an Android fan I?m a tech geek in general. I guess what really decided it for me was as simple as it was something I hadn?t tried before. I think I was always peeking over the fence and trying to understand the religious devotion that people had with the iPhone. I figured, ?They must be doing something right to sell a million phones in a day! So what the heck!? At $9 even if I don?t particularly like the phone at least I?m not out anything right?
Wrong. Wow I was SO wrong! Admittedly I went with a 3Gs due to the supposed issues with the iPhone 4.So it isn?t the newest of the line. It has the same iOS version and all the same features pretty much so I can deal with not having a ?Retina Display? and that front facing camera. So I order and received and started out playing with my new toy.
The first thing I noticed was how horrible the battery life was. I couldn?t ( and still can?t) make it through a full day on the thing without throwing it on the charger. I admit I?m a power user but with my Droid overclocked at 1.25ghz I could make it a full day without the need of a charger. And people use this thing for business?? My wife almost daily teases me that her Torch still has 95% battery when I?m reaching for my charger.
Then came my distaste for a homepage of apps and no widget support. Granted, I knew going into this that that wasn?t an option but I didn?t think I would miss it as much as I do. And along with that is the not having the option to change things like the home app or even the sms app. You just can?t truly make the phone exactly how you want it.
Unless you jailbreak it :D Which I have to say took me about two days to do. This opened up a slew of new options that I really wanted. Such as quick sms reply, simi-widgets, a slightly better notification system. Although these things were definitely an improvement I still didn?t find myself truly enjoying my phone.
Then I really got a surprise. I get all my tweeks and apps set up and got my phone running pretty much like I liked it and all of a sudden my home screen started crashing all the time. Like every 20 minutes to 4 hours. So the trouble shooting starts. Delete tweeks, reinstall apps, turn this on, turn that off. Only to find out it isn?t the apps or tweeks themselves, but the available ram on the phone. I had so much (which to an Android user wouldn?t seem a lot) going on on the phone that it was running out of memory and having to reboot itself into ?Safe Mode?. Now all of a sudden I?m back in Blackberry Storm land having to install something to monitor and clear my memory without restarting.
Another thing that erks me, and AT&T?s 3G network (or the lack there of in my area) is partially to blame, is that if I?m not on wifi and I decide to stream music from Slacker or even browse the web my calls automatically divert to voicemail! Really?! You mean to tell me that the call wont take priority and kill anything using the EDGE signal and allow me to be notified of a call?! FML!
So needles to say I regret my switch. To make it worse my mom calls me the other day and tells me she just upgraded and bought the Captivate for the same price I paid for my iPhone. So I get the joy of teaching her the ins and outs of using Android all while kicking my self in my posterior.
The bright side to this though is with the way the mobile market is progressing, by the time I?m eligible for an upgrade there will be some downright AMAZING Android phones available.
So here?s to Android.
End rant-

LOL. Sorry for the mess, but this sure was entertaining to read! I hope things sort themselves out asap for you and you're with Android again soon.

Me too lol. I keep trying to talk my mom out of her Captivate but it just ain't flying lol.
