I found many suggestions for fixing problem. However I cannot do anything on the phone. Touching anything even shutdown gives the message that Touchwiz is not working. How do I get anywhere without Touchwiz???

If you can power off the phone then you can do a system cache clear which may help. If that doesn't, the next step would be a factory reset, again from a power off state. If those don't work then you most likely have a hardware problem.

To clear system cache:
Power off the Galaxy S3, and then simultaneously press and hold the “Volume Up-Home-Power” keys. When you feel the phone vibrate, release the “Power” button to view the Android Recovery menu. Select the “Wipe Cache Partition” option in the Recovery menu, and then reboot the device. All cache files are deleted at once.

If TouchWiz is crashing a lot, try going into your Settings >> More >> Application manager and when that comes up it will probably be showing the 'DOWNLOADED' menu. Swipe over to the 'ALL' menu, and then you'll have to scroll through the listing to get to the actual 'TouchWiz home' app. Tap the 'Force stop' button and then the 'Clear data' button. The 'Clear data' option will wipe both the app's settings and its cache. Now reboot your phone and see if this fixed the issue.

If you can't even get into your Settings to do the above, try rebooting your phone into its Safe Mode and try this again. To get into Safe Mode on your S3, power it off and then restart it while tapping continuously on the Menu button (the 'soft' button to the left of the physical Home button). Once in Safe Mode note that a lot of things will work sluggishly but go through the steps of wiping the TouchWiz settings and cache. Reboot when done. (rebooting normally will exit Safe Mode)

Thank You. This appears to have worked as Touchwiz has not quit since I cleared it. If the problem recurs, at least I know what to do to fix it. But hopefuly it will keep working!
