So in theory I could use it to build something for our devices? I think the flashing utility only works for Samsung devices, but could we make an update.zip after compiling this?

It's weird to explain but yes that is for Samsung only... Being fully Google supported makes it much easier. I am going to find a link explaining this a little better.
