One M9 owners: What are your HTC One M9 first impressions?

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

I haven't even activated my phone yet but am reading everyone's post. I didn't know keeping it on auto brightness drained your battery more and will try the Lux app someone recommended. I am going to activate my phone here soon am on my way to get my Zagg glass protector put on. Best Buy said he would give me 20% off. They also have the grey dot view not the color I wanted but I may get it just to have it. Wonder what their return policy is on cases if I don't like it. Or the color i want comes out next week. I've noticed the phoned being a little warm I think while it was plugged in but I think my M8 did that too wasn't real hot though.

And yes battery is a main concern but I have this Tenergy quick charge and it's great and my phone stays charged at night when I sleep. I always have my charger at work and an external for when I go out of town so I'll be good.

I don't want any mobile wars discussion. It's pointless. Every device has its own merits :)
I love technology, as long as it's good and I don't care who produces it.

Anyway, I wanted to post some comparison pictures of the camera. The filenames are pretty much self explainable..

My goodness.....

Just FYI, those "power apps" don't do anything you can't do yourself. They are a waste of a download. Biggest draw is network. CDMA networks use more power than GSM. If you are a in good network area you should be golden. Second is going to be your settings and whether you are attached to WiFi, LTE, or 3G. WiFi uses the least power followed by 3G and LTE. With settings I am talking about if your data connection actually sleeps or not. If you don't tell your data connection to sleep apps can pull data at their discretion. For example, having your mail app set up to send/receive every 30 minutes and weather set to sync every hour. I always use the manual settings for everything.

Thanks for your impressions guys!! Can't wait to hear more. Sounds like some negatives coming out of the gate, but I'm hoping things settle down, or HTC pushes out another update to help with some of the problems. @petvas, I wouldn't worry too much about the battery issue just yet, especially if you've been using GPS over cellular. GPS kills my iPhone 6's battery and also makes it really warm. Also I know others said batteries don't need to be cycled anymore, (which is kinda true), but it does always take a few days for me to start getting optimal battery life.

I am prepared to give the M9 some time, but this wasn't necessary with most of my previous phones, including the M8.
li-ion battery doesn't have memory effect, doesn't need prime. Once you have a calibration done (100-10-100), it is what it is.

System may need to download your apps, index your files, but none of those take more than a couple of hrs.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

I work in a building like that and when I took a trip to Atlanta for training. I was in a building with great reception and my battery couldn't do any wrong.
If you're on AT&T or Verizon, Atlanta has crazy good service. T-Mo still has a lot of dead areas, and Sprint I have no idea about.

But that's a great point that some don't think about. At my job in Atl when I had T-Mobile I just ended up turning cellular off and only used WiFi inside til I went outside and could get a signal. Battery life greatly improved for me. I also remember before LTE coverage was widespread in my area, I just turned it off because it was killing my battery trying to grab onto the tiniest signal it could. Just used HSPA until the towers were updated.

I'm pretty anal with my phone. When I receive a new phone I go in and turn off or disable everything I do not use. I make sure if I can't get rid of an app that I'm not signed into it. I set up my data settings to sleep and place the apps that do require data on manual settings. HTC was horrible about having all features and some radios turned on when you first get your phone. I think they stopped doing that after the EVO 4G. No wonder people batteries were draining like hell. People didn't know what apps needed to be "controlled."

you should give Tmo a new chance, it has been improving rapidly. check their enhanced coverage map made from real user reported data T-Mobile’s 4G Network | Check Your Coverage | T-Mobile Blazing Fast 4G Coverage , ATL is all pink now.

Thanks for the pics. That HDR does look terrible, but at least we know that's not the setting that HDR was meant to be used. Do they look ok for phone viewing? I generally just MMS, post on social media, and such. I just need something good enough for that.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

i feel like the order of what takes the least battery should be wifi, LTE and then 3G. In my experiences my phone tends to drain much quicker wehn connected to 3G. The again its Sprints 3G were talking about....

Yes but many don't get that. Pretty much what you see out of the gate is what you get with today's modern phones.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

That's like me at work in the basement of the hospital I get awful signal 3G an dit drains my battery so fast. I usually turn off mobile data and connect to my works guest wifi immediately and my phone sits in my pocket. I have Sprint and at my old Condo I got no good signal at all and when my internet would go down I was screwed. But now where I live I get good 4G LTE. I'll test this phone out tomorrow at work. Getting it activated now.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

I usually don't have alot of things synching and I know mail and even facebook will refresh on opening. But I have Sprint and I never know whether to put my settings on CDMA/LTE or Automatic but she just helped me activate my phone and said either one. But my play store still won't come up says error retrieving server still and she says I need to call google play store. So I don't need an auto brightness app and it is best though to not check auto brightness to save on battery is that correct? I'm am in great LTE where I live but I only see one bar on the new phone I don't know I thought my old phone showed more bars but I am always on wifi at home anyways/ But now my phone is activated at least. This phone feels smaller to me too but I had a Otterbox Commuter on my M8 and for now I have this Insginia Best Buy soft shell case and I like the way it looks and feels in this $15 dollar case.

https://gigaom.com/2012/02/17/why-lte-sucks-your-battery-that-is/

LTE phones are fast, but they can also suck a battery dry in a few hours. Nokia Siemens Networks did some preliminary studies on LTE phone’s power drain versus their HSPA (3G) counterparts and found that LTE devices consume from 5 percent to 20 percent more than previous-generation phones, depending on the application used. Those numbers, however, seem conservative compared to the anecdotal evidence. In its review of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Engadget found that the Google Navigation running over the LTE network ate battery power faster than the Nexus’ car charger could restore it.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

Any of you guys that have the phone noticed a difference in the keyboard swiping/autocorrect dept? I read that HTC switched to a different 3rd party to power their keyboards. I loved the stock keyboard on the M8,

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

A few thoughts from me. I received my M9 on 3/30 around 10am EST. The device is fantastic in hand. The feel is even better than the M8 and it feels more solid. The UI has no stutter to speak of. Connectivity and call quality are both fantastic. Battery life has been enough to get me through the day. I took it off the charger at 6am and still have 10% at the time of typing this. 4 1/2 SOT.

The screen took me about 3 whole hours to get accustomed to, simply because I had the M8 right next to it. Now, I actually prefer the M9 screen to the M8. I never realized how warm the tone was on the M8. The M9 definitely has the better screen, it gets brighter than the M8 and goes darker than the M8 for night time usage. I found the power button placement to be a nuisance at first but have become accustomed to it. The sound quality, both from headphones/aux cable in the car and the speaker is better than the M8. I went to youtube and tested them with some Dolby videos and I was amazed at what the M9 can do.

The camera......ugh.......The camera! It's not that bad. The third party apps I have been using(VSCO cam and Perfectly clear) do a better job than the stock camera app. I also do a lot of post processing with my pics, mostly due to the fact that I have three little boys that I take a crap-ton of pictures of and share them to Facebook. Any ways the images below are some shots with a Canon DSLR(my wife's baby) of the the M8 and M9 screens next to each other and then some random shots I've taken with the camera(stock app, auto and no edits). I will have to post some more pics later with the third party apps.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this phone! I will recommend it to everyone.

Nice ... Man which is M8 and which is M9 :)
Just kidding, from the side lip looks like the gold one is the M9. Glad you are having fun with the new M9.

[edited by Mod]...next time he should probably not use a phone with a cracked screen to use as a comparison. That's just tacky.

I hate when people say "it feels more solid in the hand." What else is it supposed to feel like in your hand? And its made out of the same material as the M8...aluminum. They feel the exact same...lol.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

I'm confused on the keyboards I just remember pushing the microphone down once touching it to bring up the mic cause I speak alot of my text. Now you have to hold the mic button down to bring it up. The M8 had swype also didn't it maybe that's what I was using but under keyboards here their is only one choice. I'm just not used to holding down the mic button to bring it up I just touch once with out holding no big deal just have to get used to it. I thought I used the HTC keyboard on my M8 cause I set my trace color and had it on HTC Trace but I just looked and it's checked for swype.

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

I need help I was downloading apps I don't a few at a time and it had some updates too and I just took my phone off the charger and it keep saying Sense Home has stopped unexpectedly. Would you like to send an error report to HTC but it keeps coming back over and over again. I've rebooted turned phone off it wont go away pops right back up. :-( I don't want to have to reset and start over I was 1/2 way done setting it up.Is their an HTC app somewhere I can clear out data or cache to make this stop. Or do you think an app I downloaded is causing it to hang up?
