One M9 running Android 6 just factory reset itself

My phone was sitting on my desk plugged in charging. I had the screen on with my text messages up. All of a sudden it turned off and restarted, and now everything is gone. Full factory reset, although thankfully I had backups enabled. Has anyone else experienced this and/or know why that happened?

I haven't experienced anything that extreme yet but my phone has a bad habit of initiating programs on it's own. To the point so much that I have decided at my next contract I will find another brand of phone other than HTC.

Was your account hacked?
Did you have "remote reset/ wipe" enabled?
I noticed Outlook can reset/ wipe my device, I believe Google can too.
Check your accounts and reset your PW.
