why is it, that on some networks, it will be the same phone, except under a different name and UI

like, how the Moto droid is the milestone in europe and non-verizon carriers

just an observation, not sure if it's carrier specific reasons or not.

The carrier gets to choose the final name, ATT especially likes to be different from everybody else. They will rename anything.

They all do that. Look at the different names for the Galaxy S2.
