Going to upgrade my phone on 7/1 I've had galaxy phones for a while now but looking to upgrade to the "one" currently rocking a gs3 pretty happy with it gs4 doesn't seem different enough for me to get it. My main concern is really updates on the phone? How good is HTC with updates?( I am a sprint customer btw) Samsung is pretty good with updates so I'd like to know should I expect similar time frames. I really like the look and feel of the one and I'm eager to try something different( even though all android in the end in the same)

Re: one vs GS4

I think Samsung has finally graduated to mastering the art of copying Apple: they made an uninspired continuation of their previous phones but will continue to attract millions of indiscriminate buyers simply because of the name. Just like the iPhone.

Oh lord, funny how everyone rooted for the S3 because we loved the underdog and now everyone is so desperate to prove their phone better they keep bashing rival companies trying to make them the new Apple.

Apple must love all this attention. Being talked about, even via gratuitous, "obligatory" anti-Apple mentions, is generally good publicity for a company like that.

Re: one vs GS4

ok how about someone just give me some insight anyone else made this switch?

or planning to?

plenty of other forums to argue about guys just looking for some help lol

They're both better. Which one is better for you is probably best found out by you testing them. Read reviews (stress the multiple review part) to get a good feeling for what to expect then go into a store and play with them both. Define your "must haves" and your "can do withouts" and find which phone best meets those stipulations. Best luck.

Edit: It's only recent history that Samsung got good with updates. A few years ago they were terrible. Htc is kind of the opposite but I have a feeling that will change due to the One being a kind of all in. Case in point, the Sprint One got an update that included a fix for the capacitive buttons fairly quickly. I look forward to that continued service.

HTC has generally been good with updates, but the carriers have been the ones dragging their feet. Case in point, the jelly bean update for the one x came out a couple weeks after Samsung released theirs (around late October), but it wasn't available to at&t one x owners until Feb.-march timeframe.

Not sure how well sprint is with updates though.

just switched from an S4 to the HTC One. The S4 was a frustrating experience for me

- very laggy (slower than my previous S3)
- constant problems with the SD cards (random ejecting, tried several cards)
- flimsy build quality. Screen cracks easily (two of my colleagues had it happen to theirs)

The One's almost completely trouble-free

Yes.

OP, it's really up to you. That's the joy of Android - it's really about preference. If I were you, with an S3 right now, I'd get the One for sure. But that's because I'm looking for an entirely new phone. I had the original Galaxy on Verizon and as most people on this forum discovered, it was terrible. I know the Galaxy has much improved since then, the 3 and 4 being awesome phones, but I don't think I'd get another one from past experiences. I was so fed up with that phone that I went to Apple. While for a year and a half my phone has been okay and reliable, it's boring. Upgrading after two years, in my opinion, should be an epic experience - not just upgrading to a very similar yet slightly faster version of what you already have. But people are different! I think HTC has its advantages over Samsung as far as the hardware is concerned - if you want a sturdier build, front speakers, a nice stock interface (maybe you like Samsung's, but I'm a big Sense fan), and a change - go with the One!

It's a huge financial commitment though so it's up to you. What I do is just watch the reviews, go to the store to play with the phones I'm deciding between [I thought for sure I wanted the S4 and when I played with both that and the One at a Sprint kiosk, I fell in love with the latter], and go with my gut; go with the phone I like more. Good luck. :)

I upgraded from the S3 to the S4 and I also have the One. Things you MAY miss from the S3 that the One cannot provide:

1. Customizable LED
2. Dedicated menu key to avoid black bar eating up screen space, which is already quite limited compare to the S4(this will allegedly be fixed by HTC in an update but no release date for US carriers has been announced)
3. Dedicated home button to activate screen instead of always relying on the awkwardly placed power button every time.
4. Ability to zoom and crop pictures. The lack of mega pixels on the one makes for good pics on the phone or Facebook but not much beyond that.
5. Gorilla glass 3 instead of last generation 2.
6. Easy access to settings toggles. Again to be fixed In future update.

Again, some or none of this things may not be important to you. the One is a great device regardless of its shortcomings and I use it regularly.

This is one example of Samsung's update frequency. This update is in response to 16 GB phone customers concerns. Of course you can't judge a company on one update but you should compare updates frequency since phone release and what they address. It will be quite a while before a NA model phone sees that update. Regardless, your linking that article was in response to a question about HTCs updating habits, not Samsung's.

HTC is actually pretty good with updates. The international model has already seen 2. In the NA market, updates are released at the carriers disclosure, so recieval will always vary.

The recieving of these updates. There, better?

Uh, actually RECEIVING would be better but I was kidding in the 1st place.

New HTC One owner here. I had the original Samsung Galaxy "S1", then an iPhone 4S...and just got my HTC One. I personally love it and am happy with the decision. I debated for a few weeks on whether to get the GS4 or not.

To me, I appreciated the HTC One build quality over the GS4, which has been written about ad nauseum. But coming from an iPhone I "get it" and appreciate it. Also, I found the GS4 to simply be too large! the HTC fits in my hand better and while the screen is a bit smaller than the GS4, it's more convenient in my mind with a less clickable area and less real estate, I can still one hand the HTC with ease.

As far as updates. That's the exact reason on why I originally left Samsung/Android a few years ago. But I do not think updates should be much better now with both phones being so popular.

Personally, coming from an S3 I didn't see the S4 being much of an upgrade...At least on Verizon. They had a 16GB with only 9GB available of on-device storage. Yes, you could use an SD Card, but good luck playing games off of that. Anyway, they screwed my S3 up so bad with that multi-window update that I ported my number back to Sprint and bought a One. This phone is hands-down the best one I've owned yet, and it's really fast. I wonder if the USB port is a 3.0 too since my music loads really fast off of my desktop computer, and that's not using Sync...just a drag and drop to the music folder.
