one vs GS4 upgrade?

I actually have both devices. Out of the box, I would say the HTC One is a much better device. No stuttering, lag, etc and I really like sense. Of course everyone's tastes and needs are different. HOWEVER, if you tweak the settings on the Galaxy S4, install a custom ROM (highly recommend MDOB), use Nova Launcher, and/or disable the samsung and carrier bloat and garbage, then the Galaxy S4 wins hands down.

I know the Samsung build quality doesn't match the HTC One, but if you actually use it instead of paying too much to the aesthetics, the Galaxy S4 fits better in my hands, is lighter, and the .3-inch difference in screen size does make a difference. It also takes better overall photos (but HTC One wins in low-lights) and has better overall performance (after rooting and modding).

If you don't have the patience for all of that, again I recommend the HTC One. Out of the box, the Galaxy S4 was frustrating to use without any tweaking.

Hope that helps.

I upgraded from the S3 to the S4 and I also have the One. Things you MAY miss from the S3 that the One cannot provide:

1. Customizable LED
2. Dedicated menu key to avoid black bar eating up screen space, which is already quite limited compare to the S4(this will allegedly be fixed by HTC in an update but no release date for US carriers has been announced)
3. Dedicated home button to activate screen instead of always relying on the awkwardly placed power button every time.
4. Ability to zoom and crop pictures. The lack of mega pixels on the one makes for good pics on the phone or Facebook but not much beyond that.
5. Gorilla glass 3 instead of last generation 2.
6. Easy access to settings toggles. Again to be fixed In future update.

Again, some or none of this things may not be important to you. the One is a great device regardless of its shortcomings and I use it regularly.

#4 is not really true. If you had just stuck with zoom and crop and added singnificantly - as in "significantly zoom and crop" I would give it a pass.

Otherwise, the One's 4mp is plenty for view on a 1920x 1080 screen. In fact it has a 40% overabundance of pixels for the purpose and the S4 file having 3x the pixels helps it not a whit in this regard as it can only display the same 1920 x1080 pixels as the one.

Going to upgrade my phone on 7/1 I've had galaxy phones for a while now but looking to upgrade to the "one" currently rocking a gs3 pretty happy with it gs4 doesn't seem different enough for me to get it. My main concern is really updates on the phone? How good is HTC with updates?( I am a sprint customer btw) Samsung is pretty good with updates so I'd like to know should I expect similar time frames. I really like the look and feel of the one and I'm eager to try something different( even though all android in the end in the same)

I noticed that there is a leaked 4.2.2 android build out in the wild as of last week. It includes apparently further improvments to the one camera, a work around to get rid of the black menu bars, ability to remove facebook from the gallery among other improvements. I understand the realease to consumers is immenent, but how soon the US carriers will get it to us is the big question.

Sprint and HTC are usually pretty alright. It's not an Apple nor is it an International unlocked version, but it's pretty good. On Sprint, the EVO 4G LTE was getting updates quicker than the SGS3 many times.

Multi window was pushed out to the S3, and the S4 came with it. Does the One have this feature? I find I'm using this more and more on my S4, and the wifey likes it on her S3.

I played with the s4 at Best Buy (I had the Note 2 at the time) and I wasn't super impressed. I had a guy offer to trade me his HTC One for my Note 2 and I took him up on it just because I'm a phone junkie and I'm in love! I don't know if it's because its a new "face" compared to the Samsungs I've been using for the past couple of years, but I love it! I love the Zoe on the One too. Oh and I'm also on Sprint too and it seems that the One gets way better signal than any of my Samsung phones I had. I'm also in an LTE area and I'm getting LTE where I never could before.

I'm actually considering purchasing an unlocked One from HTC just because of this. It still amazes me how the carriers bow to Apple with regards to OS updates but every other OEM is at the mercy of the carriers' testers.

Yeah, that's already been taken care of, thanks.

I have always been a galaxy fan. Used the s2 s3 note 2 and s4. However, I was extremely disappointed with the s4!!first of all the lte didn't work with most carriers and there was too much lag on the device. The camera is amazing when I'm outdoors and it's sunny, but indoors there was too much noise. I just bought an HTC one and it's very fast and the screen is amazing. Gets a little getting used to but I'm happier with it!plus most of the features on s4 I hardly used. First time with HTC and so far so good;-) oh and typing on HTC is amazing! The s4 wasn't that accurate and Iwas cconstantly correcting.

Uh, actually RECEIVING would be better but I was kidding in the 1st place.

Well if we are going to get that technical wouldn't "receipt ? be the most proper usage in the context that it was being used in that post :p

Both are great devices but you pretty much answered your own question in the first part of your post. I have the gs4 also and personally think there is enough improvement over the gs3 to warrant an upgrade. Different enough? Well that's subjective. Most difference is under the hood and small refinements here and there and the major improvement of the camera app. It sounds like you are looking for a completely different experience which the s4 doesn't provide. The One is definitely a fresh take for an Android device. Not saying its better but it is definitely different and mostly in a good way. I've had both devices for the better part of a month and still can't determine if one is better than the other. I find myself using the gs4 more mostly because of the bigger screen and I prefer the gs4 email app but I enjoy using the One more.

New HTC One owner here. I had the original Samsung Galaxy "S1", then an iPhone 4S...and just got my HTC One. I personally love it and am happy with the decision. I debated for a few weeks on whether to get the GS4 or not.

As far as updates. That's the exact reason on why I originally left Samsung/Android a few years ago. But I do not think updates should be much better now with both phones being so popular.
That's the exact route I took - original Galaxy, iPhone, and now almost ready to upgrade. I was frustrated with my Galaxy for the reason you mentioned, along with the crappy GPS.

Not yet, and if they do push it out I will not take it until everyone else who owns a One (including the Afghan guy living in a cave) has tested and approved it. I took the update on my S3, and that's why I now own a One. It RUINED my S3.

It's probably going to get worse. I've been reading news stories more frequently lately outside the USA that investigations are being called for regarding Apple's demands to bypass carriers. I think some Chinese telecoms have flat out refused to agree with their terms.
