Hey guys, I currently own a WP 7.5 device and I sort of like it, but I have gotten to ok to upgrade my phone. At first, I was set on getting a lumia 920, but then I learned about the HTC One and all of the great reviews it has been getting. The main thing that scares me about Android is that I hear a lot that it has a lot of apps unlike WP8, but it has quantity over quality. Is this true? And how does Jelly Bean 4.1.2 compare to WP 8 in terms of user satisfaction, smoothness, and features?

Yeah, sure, a lot of extra stuff gets on to the Google Play Store, and not all of it is quality. But there are certainly a plethora of good, proper apps available just like you'd find on iOS and Windows, and sometimes you'll find some nice goodies because there are more things available. I would not base the purchase solely off the app store, as you are going from less to more essentially. I would consider it if I was going from Android or iOS to a Windows phone.
However, I like the new Windows tiles, but I think there is a lot more work that needs to be done to make it more versatile. It all seems to be ling lists of things to scroll through, less grid-like if you will. There is potential, but the question is if it will be pursued.
A nice thing to remember is that Android plays well with others, including Windows.
User satisfaction is what you make of it. The top end Android phones like you're eyeballing are very powerful, albiet different. Android is simply the operating system, manufacturers can overlay their own style and functionality to the base, such as HTC's Sense 5 on the ONE or TouchWiz on the Galaxy. Since you'rethinking the HTC ONE, I think you have zero worries, it is the closest to a Windows 8 mobile environment in an Android system. It is neat, tidy, and streamlined. I am VERY fond of it personally, though I ultimately believe I will be purchasing the Galaxy S4. You won't go wrong with the ONE with it if you ask me. Keep in mind, I say the experience is what you make of it as Android is very customizeable. Where other OSs give you things to do, and that's the end of it; Android lets you pick, add, and choose what YOU find necessary or useful.

Ultimately, I would go with the ONE in place of the 920, you're getting newer tech with a new experience that should feel somewhat familiar. Good luck on your hunt. :)

I had a Lumia 920, excellent phone!!! Great camera, display and the touch screen was excellent.....apps sucked! I play maybe one or two games (honestly) for example words with friends on the 920 was so slow it was unbearable!!!! I really enjoy what windows is doing and Nokia, but app wise they have a lot of catching up....I don't care for instagram, but the fact that a third party had to make an instagram rip off for the 920 is sad, and FB for the 920 is terrible. I finally got used to I.E. but love chrome!!! If you get the One be careful thats all, common sense, don't download apps with shady reviews or say anywhere that there is advertisement. I have only met one person who got a virus from an app and it was for free music, so you should be fine.....personally I prefer the one cause I customize it all the time so I dont get bored lol, the launchers are a lot of fun and ya don't need to root the phone!

I have two phones: an HTC One and a Lumia 920, so it's safe to call me a fan of both! A quick overview of the main points in comparing them:

Windows Phone is a great OS with an emphasis on glanceable information through the live tiles that let you get lots of quick little updates in a small amount of screen real estate. The OS in general really is very well designed in terms of letting you do your most common tasks as efficiently as possible. For example you have a 'Me' tile that will centralize all your major social network interactions, messaging, phone calls sent and received, and more. You can also pin tiles for your favorite people and it will centralize all your interactions with that person in one place. It's simple, efficient, and IMO a very fun OS. WP8 allowing you resize the tiles between small, medium, and large rather than just medium and large makes a huge difference in how customizable your screen feels.

Having said that, you have one long list of scrolling tiles, no folders and no customizable backgrounds. Some people feel really restricted by that. You swipe right to get a list of all apps sorted alphabetically. Once again no folders, but you can just jump to an app by choosing its starting letter very efficiently. It may sound very restrictive but there is a method to Microsoft's seeming madness because it is that restricted structure that lets them really orchestrate how things flow. Some people will feel boxed in, others really love how it all coordinates. The intention in general is to rely on their aggregating mechanisms rather than lots of individual apps. To put it another way: the OS is *task* centric, not *app* centric.

As others have said, app availability is still a significant issue. There are many excellent windows phone apps, but there are some heavy hitters missing. You can probably find a good app for most of your needs, but once again the OS is more about finding a good way to do your tasks and sticking with that, rather than having a huge array of apps all doing sort of the same thing. As before, some people will feel really restricted, and others will appreciate the simplicity.

For the phones themselves, (both of which I really like), here's my thoughts in no particular order:
  • The lumia 920 is definitely a bulky phone, but I don't find it annoyingly so. While the HTC One clearly borrows from the iPhone design playbook, the Lumia is a quirky odd duck that really stands out. I really like its unusual design, it has very nice handfeel and is an example of a "plastic" phone that nevertheless feels about as indestructible as a brick. So, HTC One = Elegance; Lumia 920 = Inventively quirky
  • Camera: The lumia 920 camera is still slightly better than the HTC One in low-light situations, though the One comes the closest to it of any other phone I've seen or heard of. The camera UI on the lumia is VERY well designed, and I like how camera-related apps are not separate, but instead treated as "lenses" that are usable from right within the camera app without having to exit out of the camera and go into the app. However, the One's Zoes, highlights & events, and camera options are much more powerful IMO. The Lumia 920 almost catches up if you download a few of the best Lenses. Overall I'd give the Lumia the edge on physical camera capabilities, but the One the edge on features/adjustments. For video I'd still say the Lumia is better because its OIS seems more capable. (It better be, because they sure bulked up the phone to squeeze it in there!)
  • Sound: The Lumia has a good speaker and headphones sound good on it. It's Dolby processing is quite good and pretty equal to Beats in terms of how it makes music sound. I listen to music all day long so this is key to me, and both phones are well ahead of the pack. Having said that, I prefer sound on the HTC One. The Lumia sounded better than my prior HTC phones (even the Rezound), but with this latest version Beats seems noticeably better to me.
  • Phone calls / reception: Both are excellent. The HTC gets better reception and calls sound better on it, but it seems a touch fussy in how I hold the phone when making a call in order to sound clear for the person on the other end of the line.
  • Screen: The Lumia's is very good, and could almost be mistaken for an AMOLED screen because the colors are so vivid, and blacks are very deep. But, the screen on the HTC One is just the most superb one I've seen to date. It has colors that are strong w/o being over-saturated, and the resolution is just phenomenal.

To summarize, Windows Phone is a really smartly built OS. It'll feel restrictive at first, but if you do adapt to it's way of doing things you'll find lots of common daily tasks can be accomplished super efficiently and easily. Live tiles are fun, and Nokia is EXCELLENT about supplying some top notch apps for their customers for free.

I have a lot of affection for my Lumia 920, and think it is an amazing phone, but the HTC One is truly special, and is clearly the better overall package IMO. Having said that, I'd encourage you to go to a Microsoft store and have someone show you the ins and outs of the OS, it's different enough that just goofing with it a few minutes in the store won't do it justice. See if you fall in love with it: you just might. In that case, give the Lumia a shot, otherwise grab an HTC One and rest assured you're getting state of the art!

EDIT: I noticed the OP has been using WP 7.5, so lots of what I said is probably old news to you, but I'm hoping it'll be helpful to people less familiar with Windows Phone.

I like the focus options the HTC One has more, and find it is better at focusing on what I want. It seems to focus faster, and also takes the picture much faster. I also think the One's macro mode takes nicer pictures than the Lumia's, so those are the sorts of things I'm thinking of when I say features & adjustments. Don't get me wrong, I think the Lumia has a superb camera too. I do think it handles low-light better, but I find myself playing around with and enjoying the One's camera even more.

As to sound the bottom line for me is simply preference. Whether the Lumia is doing something more sophisticated or not, I found the end result better on the HTC One. I liked the sound better, and I appreciated the wider range of volume it gave me than the Lumia, but that's very much just personal preference. I can imagine for certain types of music that the Lumia would produce a better sound, but for me I have a distinct preference for the HTC One.

Ok thanks for the input guys, I think I will try to get the HTC One. I just like how its more customizable and I won't have to scroll down a long list of tiles to get to whatever app I want. I'll check back here in a month or so.

Edit: One last thing, I saw that Nokia Drive was a good app and was wondering if there is a similar app for the One that could also give me turn by turn directions offline.

I have a One and a Lumia 820. I can tell you I miss my Lumia greatly and even thinking of selling my One and go back to my Lumia.
There is no originality on Android, where as WP is so different and so easy to use.

And people saying the apps suck? which apps suck, its getting better and better everyday, I say go for the Lumia 920 if you know you love the 900. WP8 is greatly improved over WP7 and WP blue is coming out very soon! Don't be like me and get excited about an Android device and then later regret it after 2 weeks or so! I also had a Lumia 900 aswell.

Copilot works offline. I used that for a while and it was pretty good. There may be better ones out there now, so look around and you'll see you have lots of options Rocky.

Good luck and I hope you have a great time with you new phone, whether One or Lumia or whatever you end up with. :)

I just upgraded to the HTC One from a WP7.8 device (HTC Arrive). While the One is a nice phone physically, i really miss the simplicity of the Windows Phone OS. I finally registered and installed instagram and have been trying to use it for the past week and I honestly don't know what the big deal is about it. Ironically, one of the gripes people have had about WP is the lack of separate volume settings for alarm/ringer/notifications. Android has multiple volume levels you have to deal with and to be honest, it's more of a headache to me than to just have one volume setting for the entire phone. If T-Mobile had a flagship WP8 device, I would've gone with that but b/c TMo isn't really supporting WP8, I was forced to run into the arms of Android. I might pick up a Lumia 521 to use as my backup phone (Walmart is selling them for $130 right now)

I have owned the 920 I picked it up on launch day and used it for about two weeks before switching to another device. I can tell you from experience that the One is a far superior device. I have found the overall quality of the playstore to be great. Don't get me wrong the 920 isnt terrible it just lacks in comparison to the one IMO.

I owned a HTC Arrive before the One, and my biggest problem with WP is that they flat out lied to everyone. They were all for the no fragmentation yet anyone who bought a WP7 phone got screwed out of the next WP8 upgrade. WP7.8 does not make up for the lack of support at all, and I had to force the 7.8 on the Arrive since (last I checked) sprint has not pushed 7.8 out yet.

While the WP OS is great and easy to navigate, you won't miss it much once you get used to Android. It's like any other thing though, some people love it, others hate it.

Actually, Lumia has better features/adjustments, such as AF-assist light, which is useful in total darkness or near total darkness for close-up shots. HTC hasn't implemented it yet for some reason, though all necessary hardware (the LED flash light can be used for this) is already in the phone.... Lumia also has "finer" manual Exposure adjustments and there are more of them.

Actually, these 2 things work absolutely differently... Beats is just a single EQ preset (jacked-up lowest and highest frequencies), "Dolby Headphone" is a virtual surround sound mode:
Dolby Headphone
Lumia also has its own customizable EQ with a few built-in presets, but it is a separate function which has nothing to do with "Dolby Headphone" enhancement.

The first adjustments is great for camera aficionados it's probably too complicated for the majority of users and the Beats is actually not just equalizer presets but it actually had amps for each speaker and head phone jack as well as stereo sound.

Here is the short answer: forget the Lumia and go for the One!

I've had the Lumia 920 right from the start. WP8 is nice for lets say 1 week and than it is getting soooo boooring and anoying...

- lame tiles without much confguration
- a lack of cool apps (even after 6 month)
- bad battery life when using 3G
- even the cam of the One is cooler. It is simple, easy and fast with lots of cool features. The cam of the lumia might be better but on what cost?

After 2 weeks the conclusion is quite simple: I love my One!

I just picked up the phone and I love how it runs! Big thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. Are there any must have apps I should look at?

Tasker is a great app that allows for automating many tasks on your HTC One. I also recommend Pod Casts for listening to podcasts, and Google Keep for quick notes.

There was an app I remember reading about that had to do with turning off/on the power in alternate ways, but can't remember its name. Any idea what I'm talking about? And how come the phone won't connect to wifi even though it says there is a strong signal? It gets stuck at Obtaining IP address

Edit: I just had to reset my phone to fix the wifi "problem"

-FB sucks (MS is slowly getting there, but latest beta is still pretty deficient... And NO, I do NOT like to be forced to adapt to "MS way" of doing everything through extremely deficient "People" hub).
-mobile IE is ******* awful - yes, I know most websites want to optimize for WebKit's engine and not Trident, but how about giving me A CHOICE of browsers NOT based on Trident garbage? What about Flash support, which is slowly disappearing BUT is still being used on some websites?
-Nokia HERE Maps sucks (awfully outdated PoE database, traffic info sucks) - yes, someone ported Google Maps and called this app "gMaps" BUT this is a third-party app and if Google will close off the access to their maps API for these developers or if the developers of this app will "disappear" - you are stuck with either using crappy Nokia HERE maps, using a shortcut to Bing Maps (which are "hidden" by default by MS) or use Google Maps through browser (which is not very convenient).
-Choice of navigation apps sucks pretty badly (I like to use Waze - it's still not yet available for WP8).
-IM apps (Kik/WhatsApp) still suck compared to other platforms.
-Built-in Mail app is simply awful (if I want to "keep my POP mail on my phone even if it was deleted from server" - let me ******* do it!) and there are no good full-featured alternatives (like Aqua Mail).
-No good "remote desktop" apps (I use TeamViewer a lot, even on smartphones).
- No good remote IP camera/DVR monitoring apps (like from DiViS or Qnap, which I often NEED to use).
- No car remote apps (like Mbrace from Mercedes - we have 2 new MB cars and we use their apps).
- No apps for connecting to my BlackVue DR500 in-car dash camera (which has WiFi built-in and can be accessible from iOS and Android devices).
-No good and interesting (for me) games like "Clash of Clans" (which is not yet available on Android but I still play it on my iPad) or "Bard's Tale"
-No apps for streaming services likeTwitch.tv or Justin.tv (which I actually use) or LiveStream/Ustream (which I do not use but other people do).
-No good network monitoring apps (for seeing very detailed information about WiFi and cellphone networks around you, especially to the ones you are not currently connected).
I can go on for several more pages. Should I, or did you already get the idea that just because YOU use your Nokia Lumia as a phone and with a couple of basic apps - does not mean that others are satisfied with such extremely limited mobile platform?

They currently have Facebook Beta which is tons better, and also have integrated Facebook into the operating system which works perfectly.

I don't know what lies you're on about Nokia Maps using Google Maps don't try to kid anyone. Nokia & WhatsApp are currently developing WhatsApp 3.0 for WP which is going to be great. There is no issues for me with the built in mail apps, works perfectly and the rest you're talking about im sure over 99% of people don't give a crap about to be honest.

I have to admit the Live Tiles & Jessica Alba got my attention. I bought the Samsung ATIV S and after a week, the OS like BlackBerry is great but the lack of QUALITY apps was the deal breaker.

Take Bell's mobile TV, it's NOT AVAILABLE on BlackBerry and Windows 8?!?! It's $5 a month but I negotiated it to be included in my plan and I can't use it?

One of my first apps on the HTC One is Notification Toggles to get quick access to WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and other things. It can also dsplay the battery percentage in the notification bar.

I don't now if that's what you are looking for. Another thing I did is install a 3rd party launcher in order to customize the phone in more ways. I choose Nova Launcher Prime and bought a couple of Icon Packs (Goolors and Minimal UI are awesome).

If you install a 3rd party launcher, you will loose the weather, music and calendar day view widgets. EZ Weather it's an ad-free app with a clean interface and good looking widgets.

The amount of applications and games available for Android can be overwhelming, but at least you'll most definitely find whatever it is that you are looking for as well as alternatives to it. That is not to mention the sheer number of great, hardworking developers that are dedicated to providing Android users the best experience possible. Lastly, if you're going to delve into the world of customization, you're going to find that there's a whole lot more to an Android device in terms of custom ROMs, tweaks, modifications and such. I have nothing against Nokia or their Lumia device, but for me today's world is all about Android and anything else falls in line.
