Don't do what I did. I ordered an upgrade on April 22nd because the ATT rep said they were already shipping....
This is what happened when I tried to upgrade my phone with ATT Wireless.
Call 1 (Apr 22): I call to upgrade to the new HTC One X. They offer me a discounted price of $179.
Me: ?Do you have it in stock right now??
ATT: ?Yep, you?ll have it by Tuesday Apr 25.?
I check the order status and it?s (1) ordered for the wrong line on my family plan and (2) backordered.
Call 2: I call to find out why I WON?T have it by Tuesday, and to fix the wrong line.
ATT: ?It?s not even in our warehouse yet. We have no idea when we?ll be shipping it.?
Me: ?I?d like to cancel the upgrade then.?
ATT: ?No, it?s too late too cancel.?
Me: ?How the heck can it be ?too late?? You didn?t ship it yet. You don?t even have it?!?
Somehow it gets canceled.
Call 2 (Apr 29): A week later I check again.
Me: ?Do you have the HTC One X in the warehouse, ready to ship??
ATT: ?Yep, you?ll have it in a few days.?
I place an upgrade order. Sure enough it shows up on the order status as ?Back-Ordered.?
Call 3:
Me: ?I thought you had the phones in stock??
ATT: ?Don?t worry, it actually shipped already. It just didn?t update in the computer.?
A few days later it?s still on back order.
(By this time, the HTC One X isn?t so new anymore, and Amazon, Target, and Radio Shack are taking pre-orders for $49 for family plan upgrades. My $179 offer isn?t so generous anymore.)
Call 4: (May 1)
Me: ?What?s going on with my phone??
ATT: ?We don?t have it, we don?t know when we?ll have it, and when we do we don?t know when ewe?ll ship it.?
Me: ?OK, let?s cancel the whole thing.?
ATT: ?How about if we send you the Galaxy Note for $179??
Me: ?OK.?
Later I get a voicemail message.
ATT: ?Sorry, we couldn?t actually make good on the offer we made. The previous order can?t be cancelled so we can?t sell you the Galaxy Note and we can?t cancel the back-ordered HTC One X. Too bad.?
Call 5:
Me: ?Do you see where it says on the notes to my account that the rep checked the stock in the warehouse and stated the he had the HTC One X ready to ship??
ATT: ?Yes, I see it. I can?t believe it! There?s no way it was in stock. What was the rep thinking!??
Me: ?So this mistaken back-order mess is ATT?s fault, right.?
ATT: ?Yes, I?m really sorry.?
Me: ?Can you please cancel the order.?
?
ATT: ?No, even though it?s our fault, and even though we don?t even have the device we sold you, you can?t cancel the order.?
Me: ?That isn?t right.?
ATT: ?I agree with you, but my manager said it?s against our policy. There?s nothing I can do.?
